My Next Epic Solo Adventure

My Next Epic Solo Adventure

When I first started seriously travelling back in 2005 with my first backpacking trip to Europe with a friend I NEVER thought I’d travel solo, uncertainty, fear and perhaps a lack of confidence is why.  But after my first solo trip to North Carolina for a week in 2013 and then my next solo adventure travelling up the West Coast of the US for a month this spring I can finally say I can do it with confidence.  That’s not to say I don’t get anxious or even fearful at times, it means I’m confident in myself and my travel knowledge to face those feelings and other obstacles I come to.  And so, I’ve decided to up the ante to three months of solo travel, two of which will be in countries I don’t speak the language but I’m ever so excited to announce my next epic solo adventure will take me back to the UK and Europe in the spring of 2015.

My Next Epic Solo Adventure

Why return to somewhere I’ve already been when there’s a whole world to explore?

Simply because there is still so much for me to do and see and experience in the UK and Europe.  I’ve been there three times and have just scratched the surface.  I also love the way of life and their attitude towards life in Europe.  In North America I find we’re all so concerned on work, making money and then worrying about what the rest of life, constantly on the go, so caught up that we don’t take enough time to stop, breathe and enjoy life.  I’ve found in Europe that their first focus is to live life, and then worry about the rest, making money, work etc.  Life is full of café breaks with friends, family gatherings and feasts and plenty of siestas and stopping to just be in the moment!  Though I will be visiting some of the same cities and countries I have in the past, there will be many more new ones that I’ve either always wanted to visit or have been recently inspired to go to from reading some awesome tales from my fellow travel bloggers.

Where do I hope to go?

I’m hoping to spend at least three months overseas and one month of that will be spent in the UK, enjoying quality family time with my brother and his family, hopefully taking my niece to the zoo as well as exploring the many charming and historic cities like Canterbury, York and Bath.  The other two months I’ll be travelling across Europe from west to east.  Some places on my list are Lisbon, Brussels, Malta, Athens and Prague, other hopefuls include Romania, Croatia and Turkey.

What do I hope to do and see?

The opportunities are endless but I have a few musts (read about four of them in my new post 4 Reasons to Return to Europe) as well I’ll be visiting new zoos for my Lady of the Zoos blog and top on that list is the Durrell Zoo in Jersey.  After reading countless books by Gerald Durrell and being inspired by his love of wildlife, passion for conservation and then his development of his own zoo, I’ve always dreamed of visiting this small island and going to his now World renowned zoo.  I also hope to visit more UNESCO sites, of which I hear there are many on the small island of Malta, discover new and quaint bookshops, perhaps meet up with fellow travel bloggers and to stumble upon new adventures and travel tales.

I’ve got approximately eight months to plan, book, renew my passport, get visas and budget for this adventure and hope to bring you along for the ride, maybe you can even help me out with your tips, ideas and suggestions, or maybe I can help inspire you to make the trip and plan your own adventure with my updates on what I’ve found works best for me when it comes to budgeting, modes of travel, how to plan and what to bring.  I’m also hoping this will be my big travel blogging break.  By that I mean I really want to take my blog, my readers and my writing to the next level, it will be a lot of work but I’m up for the challenge if you’re with me!

In the coming months I’ll be busy chasing my dreams and living them next spring.  Here’s to a new journey!travel quote

Have you got any tips for me? Have you visited any of these places what shouldn’t I miss?

Where’s your next epic solo adventure?

  1. Solo travel is definitely different but you’re going to LOVE being in Europe solo. I’ve been traveling around Asia solo for a long time and just made my way to Europe a few weeks ago. I personally suggest Italy if you have time on your itinerary. Rome is full of history, Tuscany is full of wine and Sicily is full of beaches and amazing olive oil. Good luck on your planning and I can’t wait to see how it all goes.

  2. Sounds like a fantastic trip! We will be heading to Europe around the same time. Perhaps a blogger meet up is in the cards?

Also all your destinations are wonderful especially Croatia and I love Brussels. A city all about fries, waffles and beer? Yes please!

  4. I just completed a 14 day solo tour of Europe. I touched 11 countries. You’re going to love Europe as a solo traveler.

  5. As you get east, do not skip Bulgaria! It is such a beautiful country and has the nicest people ever. It is also easy to get to Istanbul from, since you are planning on Turkey.
