Sihpromatum - I Grew My Boobs in China

Sihpromatum …. ‘a blessing that initially appears to be a curse’

Sihpromatum – I Grew My Boobs in China is a travel memoir with a twist – written from the journals of a young teenager who did not choose to travel.  Savannah was a fourteen year old Canadian girl whose parents had separated and on top of dealing with this and the qualms of growing up her mother springs a curve – her, her sister and brother along with their mother will set off on a year of travel!

In this first volume, Savannah and her family explore China and Mongolia, living without the luxuries of home, just the bare necessities to ensure they make their money last.  In typical teenage fashion she’s resistant and her journey begins with much sulking and an unwillingness to accept her new life.  But like all great stories, Savannah’s is a tale of growth and littered with interesting and endearing characters – of whom my favourite was a simple, fun-loving Mongolian named Fortune.

On a long train ride her mother tells her to read to pass the time, she’s defiant as she hold Gone with the Wind in her hands.  Then something clicks, she briefly lets her guard down and settles into the book where she’s quickly swept away.  It’s here we start to see a slight shift.  From new experiences to long detours and learning about the amazing sights they visit to learning how to use strange new toilets, Savannah begins to blossom and mature from the ignorant young teenager she began her journey as to a strong young woman who learned to live in the moment.  Savannah Grace’s writing, from journal to book, blends brilliant imagery, stark truths and a pureness that will lead this budding author into an honorable career.

Sihpromatum – I Grew My Boobs in China will remind you that attitude is everything, if you open yourself to new possibilities, choose happiness and be honest with yourself life can offer a world full of amazing adventures.

Have you read Sihpromatum – I Grew My Boobs in China? If so, what did you think?
