Goals for 2016
Happy New Year and welcome to 2016
Another year is upon us and all I keep thinking about was how awesome 2015 was! Boy, it’s going to be a tough one to top. And while for the last couple of months I’ve been in a travel funk – as I have no big trips planned or even in the works for the first time in 10 years! Crazy I know! But while I may not be jet-setting to another country I do plan to travel, I mean I have to its in my DNA now! I’ve also got some other goals for 2016 in mind and while all may not be travel related they all share a common thread – living life to the fullest.
With no international travel on the horizon I decided to not dampen my travelling soul with loss and instead have decided to travel locally and explore more of Ontario’s awesome gems. After coming across an article last year about 14 Natural Wonders You Won’t Believe Are in Ontario it lingered in my mind and I’ve decided to use it as a template for 2016 by hopefully travelling to at least half of them. From Caledon’s Badlands that look more like a Mars landscape than somewhere just outside Toronto to the stunning cliffs of Scarborough – no, not in Yorkshire but its Ontario namesake, Ontario has some wild natural wonders that look like you could be somewhere else and I can’t wait to check them out. Also included in my Ontario wonders list are caves, gorges and of course waterfalls. Just because I don’t live in some exotic country doesn’t mean it’s not worth exploring.
I really started getting into hiking last year and went on some amazing hikes, from the Trans Canada Trail to Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh and even Cinque Terre’s Blue Trail. Hiking is just what the doctor ordered, getting out into nature, breathing in the fresh air, soaking in the beauty that surrounds us turns any day into a great day. I’m hoping to amp up my hiking this year with more hikes and my home town of Simcoe County has some amazing trails. I’m also hoping to start the Bruce Trail up in Tobermory, Ontario sometime this year.
Other Goals for 2016 – Ways to Increase Overall Happiness
This year is all about living life to the fullest and doing what I love, whether it’s reading, writing, hiking or traveling. And about choosing to not worry about what others think of me or their judgments on how I live my life, it is mine, right? I also want to stop beating myself up over mistakes or because ‘I’m not doing enough’. Life is not easy so why make it harder on ourselves, we should all take Taylor’s advice and ‘Shake it off’. And so I’ve decided to incorporate a few things into my life that will help create more happiness, thoughtfulness and enrichment.
The first is my little jar of joy. I came across this a few weeks ago and fell in love with the idea. Every time something makes you happy you write it on a little scrap of paper and fold it up and throw it in the jar. Whether it’s a few a day or a bunch a month, the goal is to be grateful and more conscious of the happiness in our lives. And at the end of the year – or if you’re feeling blue and need a pick me up, you open the jar and read all your joyful moments.
I must admit while I’ve always enjoyed food I’ve never been a real ‘foodie’ and honestly I spent most of my life not keen on trying new foods. Something changed last year while I was on the road and made me a level 1 foodie. While I’m still in the process of becoming a full fledged foodie, I started trying a lot more new foods and even cooking a lot more. So, this year I’d like to try to kick that up a notch and keep trying new foods and trying new dishes at least a few times a month.
