2 Days in Santa Barbara Itinerary: Best Things to do, Tours & More

Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the mighty Pacific Ocean is Santa Barbara. This central California city has a Mediterranean vibe, with its stucco buildings and terracotta roofs. While some traveling along the Pacific Coast may continue on I encourage you to stop and spend a couple of days. After a lovely visit with a friend, who’s lived there most of her life, I’ve created an ideal 2 days in Santa Barbara itinerary.

10 Things to do with 2 Days in Santa Barbara

If you’re planning a US West Coast itinerary I encourage you to set aside at least two days in Santa Barbara. There are plenty of things to do in Santa Barbara! Visitors will find something to suit everyone’s interests, from hiking to wine tasting.

Old Mission Santa Barbara

The Mission Santa Barbara will sweep you off your feet as soon as you see it. With its pale pink columns and pink roofed towers, the mission oozes sweetness and innocence. And all around is stunning natural beauty, with its perfectly manicured green lawn and backdrop of mountains.

The Mission was established in 1786 by Franciscan friars. Set on 13 acres the Mission is top of the list of what to do in Santa Barbara. You can visit the Mission by yourself or enjoy a guided tour of the nine-room museum and the beautiful gardens. But please note it is still a practicing mission, so please dress and act modestly.

If you are visiting Santa Barbara during the Memorial Day weekend you should definitely visit the Mission. During this weekend you can enjoy the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival where artists use chalk pastels on the Mission’s driveway. The pieces they create are unbelievable and it helps raise money for the Children’s Creative Project.

Visit the Botanic Garden

If you’re looking for a dose of nature head to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. With over 1,000 plants native to California, views of both the mountains and the Pacific, and over five miles of trails it’s easy to spend a few hours here.

Set on 78 acres, the Botanic Garden has a lot to offer. There’s a Japanese Teahouse, guided walks, workshops, and even bird-watching sessions. Check ahead before you visit to see if there’s something special going on that you can join in.

Santa Barbara Courthouse

Santa Barbara County Courthouse

If you love beautiful buildings, history, and art then you’ll love the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. Built in 1929 in the Spanish-Colonial style, the courthouse is home to a garden, roof-top 360-degree views over Santa Barbara, wrought-iron chandeliers, and stunning hand-painted murals.

There are free tours you can join to learn about the building, its stories, and all its incredible details. Or you can wander yourself, but be sure to look up. Walls and ceilings are painted. The ceiling of the Clock Gallery is painted with the constellations as they would have looked when Santa Barbara was named in 1602.

farmers market

Go to a Farmers Market

One of the best ways to start your morning is at a local farmers market, and there is one in Santa Barbara nearly every day of the week, except Mondays. With its near perfect climate, Santa Barbara and area has a year-round growing season and much of which is grown organically.

The slow food movement is big here and you’ll probably see local chefs shopping alongside you for local produce for their restaurants. While there are farmers markets around town on various days the best one to catch is the Tuesday one downtown. State Street is taken over by food, music and all the great fresh smells. There’s nothing better than shopping local. Some of my favourite picks are pistachios, avocados, pears, and all the beautiful flowers.

Visit the Santa Barbara Zoo

If you’re looking for what to do in Santa Barbara with kids or for those who just love animals a trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo is always fun. Set on 30 acres and home to over 400 animals representing 160 species the zoo has great exhibits that are natural and run successful conservation initiatives with California species like the California condor and the Channel Island Fox.

There are plenty of rare and endangered species at the zoo and a crowd favourite is the giraffes – which for a few extra dollars you can hand feed. The zoo also has a train that will take you around the outskirts of the zoo and show you some behind the scenes areas like the animal hospital as well as the zoo’s neighbour the Bird Refuge with its large pond, stunning natural scenery and home to native species.

Go for a Hike

If you’re a big outdoor nut and love exploring the trails then here are a couple of hiking trails to choose from. First, is the hike to Knapp’s Castle. Built in 1918, this once grand home is now just stone ruins. But the short one mile return hike to the Castle will reward you with awesome views and you can enjoy the scenic ruins.

The second hike is to Inspiration Point. There are two trails to get there, depending on time and ability. The Tunnel Trail is 3.5 miles roundtrip. The Jesusita Trail is about 7 miles. Both are steep in parts but once to Inspiration Point you’ll be rewarded with views of the Channel Islands and Santa Barbara’s beautiful coastline.

Stearns Wharf

Stearns Wharf

The Stearns Wharf is one of the top attractions for what to do in Santa Barbara and makes for an enjoyable afternoon. Built in 1874, Stearns Wharf is home to a ton of things to do, see, places to eat and more. You can take tours out into the water to explore, enjoy some wine tasting or do some shopping.

If you have some time visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center, located on the Wharf. This is a great place to learn about life in the Pacific Ocean and local species from the Santa Barbara Channel. Not only is it a fun spot for families but also those you love marine life.

And you don’t have to go far for dinner. Enjoy your last dinner in Santa Barbara on Stearns Wharf. There are a handful of fabulous restaurants right on the pier and most have awesome views.
