One of the hidden gems in Caledon is Heartwood Farm and Cidery! This 42-acre farm is run by a family of passionate individuals who enjoy sharing their slice of heaven and story with others. Heartwood Farm is located in the town of Erin. Their focus is on regenerative farming in all aspects, from livestock to what they grow.

If you’re looking for fun Caledon winter activities then book one of their Sugarbush Tours. The farm is home to a sweeping forest of sugar maples. You’ll learn all about the interesting farming practices behind maple syrup. Plus, one of the best parts is you even get to taste the maple straight from the tree as well as along the different stages of the boiling process!

They offer two different tours. The Secrets of the Sugarbush tour is 90 minutes and runs on weekdays and weekends throughout the maple sap season. On this tour, you’ll learn all about the science behind creating the sweet gold we love.  While this tour is focused towards adults, children are welcome.

Terra Cotta Conservation Area

If you’re looking for places to go hiking in Caledon then add Terra Cotta Conservation Area to list! The park is set on 485 acres within the Niagara Escarpment. With over ten kilometres of trails and a variety of things to do throughout the year, Terra Cotta is a great choice for day trippers from the GTA.

The conservation area is noted as one of the Credit River Valley’s most environmentally-significant places. You’ll find an assortment of landscapes within the park and along the trails. Plus, its home to a wealth of wildlife like white-tailed deer and various bird species.

For those looking for things to do in Caledon in winter, Terra Cotta offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating. In addition to all that, it’s home to one of the best maple syrup festivals in Ontario, Maple Syrup in the Park!

Maple Syrup in the Park is held on select weekends in March and throughout March Break. The festival is filled with a variety of demonstrations where you’ll learn about the history, production, and effects of climate change in regards to maple syrup. You’ll also learn about the Indigenous culture, including how they collect sap, the important times of the year, and so much more!

If you’re looking to get a short hike in during the festival, pop over to their Storybook trail. The short trail loops around a wetland and has pages of a fun maple syrup-inspired story along the path.

There’s also a maple taffy station and pancake house where you can indulge in the sweet stuff on homemade fluffy pancakes. And don’t forget to pop into the park store to find more maple goodies!

The festival also takes place at Island Lake Conservation Area. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Orangeville be sure to check out their festivities. They run a really cool tour called Maple Syrup by Lamplight! This is an evening tour through the park’s sugar bush and included maple treats by the campfire. Elliott Tree Farm

If you’re looking for things to do in Caledon during late winter then check out their Maple Syrup Harvest & Experience! The event runs weekends in March through to April 10. Whether you’re looking for cute shops or cafes in Caledon then be sure to stop at Heatherlea Farm Shoppe! Located less than 10 minutes east of downtown Erin, Heatherlea Farm is a must-stop in Caledon to fill up your cooler with incredible local goods.

The farm has been in the McArthur family for over 150 years! They’re ardent about raising and crafting the highest quality of meats, food, and promoting local. Their beef is raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics, which leads to incredible flavour.

Heatherlea Farm Shoppe is filled with local produce from over 50 farmers! They also sell a selection of homemade meals, sauces, and of course staples from their farm, like eggs and meat. Plus, if you’re visiting during maple season the shelves are littered with not only local maple syrup but maple flavoured goodies. Some fun treats include maple fudge, cookies, maple sauces, and even maple cheese!

Along with their spread of homemade premade meals like soups and casseroles, they have a lovely café! You can choose from a range of baked goods or something freshly made off the menu. They serve different sandwiches, soups, as well as coffee and tea. You can opt to get it to go or eat on their front patio.

Millcroft Inn & Spa

Are you looking for a charming country inn to escape to? The complete package can be found at Millcroft Inn & Spa! The Inn is located on 100 acres of property in the heart of Alton. A historic textile mill was transformed into an upscale hotel and restaurant.

Millcroft Inn is the perfect place for those looking for a romantic getaway or girlfriend’s escape! The converted mill is home to cozy rooms in various buildings on the property, like the original owner’s old manor house, the mill itself, and croft apartments. There’s also the stunning Headwaters Restaurant.

One thing Millcroft is known for is its spa and hydrotherapy pools. They even have a polar plunge pool! So, if you’re looking for a spa in Caledon, book a day at the Millcroft spa! The spa offers over a dozen treatments including massages and pedicures. Within the spa is also an indoor pool, a beauty shop, and a café that’s fully licensed.

One hiking trail, the Pinnacle, takes you to an awesome look out over the rolling hills of Caledon. One cool fact I learned during my stay is that they plant 50 to 60 trees every year. Plus, in the winter you can skate Mill Pond or grab a s’mores kit to enjoy fireside.

A great time to book a stay at Millcroft is in late winter, during maple season! The Inn has a ton of fun maple-themed things to do, eat, drink, and more for their Magic of Maple getaway! There are sugar bush tours that include a short hike through their 25 acres of maple trees. Here you can see the trees that the Inn taps and discover some interesting maple facts. Afterward, you’ll get to taste some fresh maple taffy!

Alton Mill Arts Centre

One of the biggest Caledon attractions is Alton Mill Arts Centre. Located in the Village of Alton, the Mill is a short ten minute walk from the Millcroft Inn.

The Alton Mill Arts Centre is said to be one of the most beautiful arts centres in Canada! The Centre is set in a large restored 1880s stone mill and is best known for the 25 different studio artists as well as galleries that call it home.

You’ll find a wide array of art forms within! Artists showcase unique clothing, paintings, sculptures, and more inside. You may even catch a few artists working on new creations during your visit! Along with the art galleries, you’ll find a museum, a café, and shops filled with unique items.

Before or after you take a browse of the shops and galleries within make time to explore the grounds. Art expands outside with a host of pieces of art and sculptures around the building. Plus, there’s even a waterfall beside the Mill!

Grab a Coffee

To all who know me, you won’t be surprised that I seek out all the best coffee shops wherever I travel. I even have a list of the best coffee shops in Ontario! So, if you’re like me and looking for fuel for your adventures then you’ll find a few great coffee shops in Caledon!

Tin Roof Café

One of my favourite cafes in Caledon is Tin Roof Café! Located in the charming small town of Erin, Tin Roof Café is adorable inside and out. The cafe has a Nordic and cozy cottage vibe with its cream interior and natural accents.

They serve a variety of amazing coffee and tea beverages! Two of my favourite are their chai charger and maple latte that is made with syrup from Willow Creek, a local farm. The Tin Roof Café is also a great stop for lunch and treats! You’ll find different sandwiches, grilled cheeses, baked goods, and more! Plus, they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options too.

Heatherlea Farm Shoppe

As mentioned above, Heatherlea Farm Shoppe is also home to a café. Located just west of Erin, it’s a perfect stop all year long! Along with sweet treats and sandwiches, you’ll find a solid cup of Propeller Coffee Co. coffee too!

Gather Café

If you’re looking for a café in Alton, that’s only a ten minute walk from the Millcroft Inn then you’re in luck! Gather Café is a new coffee shop in Caledon. You’ll find a list of great coffee and tea options with seating both inside and out front in classic Muskoka chairs. They also have a bunch of fun treats, wood-fired bagels, and wraps. Plus, there are plenty of vegan options!

Higher Ground Café

Another favourite Caledon café is Higher Ground Café. The café is located around the corner from Belfountain Conservation Area. From spring through fall you’ll find a ton of cyclists stopping at the café as it’s on a popular cycle route in Caledon. With a cozy interior and a large patio, I highly recommend grabbing a coffee and one of their home-baked goods while in the area!

Cheltenham Badlands

One of the most popular things to see in Caledon is the Cheltenham Badlands! The hamlet of Cheltenham is located in the southern part of the region and an easy day trip from Toronto.

Stretching out from an accessible boardwalk is an unusual Mars-like landscape. The Cheltenham Badlands are a natural heritage landmark in Ontario. Barren of vegetation, this 36-hectare (91-acre) site is exposed Queenston shale that was brought to the surface because of erosion. With a strange orange /reddish coloured smooth soil, it’s a stark contrast to the lush green forests that surround it.

There are three hiking trails through the area, none of which are over the fragile badlands. However, you can view them from one of the best boardwalk trails in Ontario. You’ll also find a collection of information plaques along the trail sharing the significance of the badlands area.

A visit to the conservation area Cheltenham Badlands is set in is one of the top things to do in Caledon! But please note that the park is closed during the winter and there is a reservation system in place to park and visit the site.

Pro Tip: The Cheltenham Badlands is one of the best Bruce Trail day hikes.

Caledon Trailway

One of the best hiking trails in Caledon is the Caledon Trailway! This multi-use trail runs 35 kilometres across Peel Region, from Terra Cotta to Highway 9, and ends in New Tecumseth. The trail follows an old rail line, and a portion of it is even part of the Trans Canada Trail.

As a rail trail, it is relatively flat and accessible, making it a great option for both young and old, as well as families with strollers. Along the trail you’ll encounter scenic woodlands, cross rivers, and country roads, as well as pass through small towns and farms.

Along the Caledon rail trail, you’ll find some of Ontario’s incredible natural features like the Humber and Credit Rivers, the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the Niagara Escarpment.

There are many ways to traverse the trail. You can travel it via horseback, foot, or by bike. During the summer months, it’s a popular bike trail in Caledon. An added bonus is its part of the Greenbelt Cycling Route!

Fun Fact: The Town of Caledon is home to over 260 kilometres of trails!

Afternoon Tea

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Caledon with your girlfriends or mom then book an afternoon tea! One of the best tea rooms in Ontario can be found in the town of Erin, Maddie Hatter Tea Shop & Café!

Whether you’re looking for places to eat in Caledon or cute things to do indoors, Maddie Hatter’s is the perfect spot! They have Alice in Wonderland-themed décor all around the café and even have a room for private parties. Yes, you can have your very own Mad Hatter tea party here!

Maddie Hatter’s Tea Shop offers a great selection of food options, great price points, and they have the BEST sticky toffee pudding and homemade fresh scones! You can pop in for a spot of tea, a sandwich, or their full afternoon tea service. Come hungry though as they have three-tiered trays full of goodies like savouries, scones, and fun desserts. I loved their butter tart with a chocolate top hat!

Forks of the Credit Provincial Park

Another top spot in the area is Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. Located within an hour northeast of the GTA, it’s an ideal day trip. As part of the Niagara Escarpment, you’ll find an array of incredible natural features including rolling hills, a kettle lake, and a waterfall.

If you’re looking for places to hike in Caledon, Forks of the Credit has six different trails. Two of Ontario’s top trails also run through the park, the Bruce Trail and the Trans Canada Trail. The park is also home to the ruins of an 1820s mill which can be found beside the Cataract Falls.

This is a popular park in every season! In the winter you can cross-country ski and go snowshoeing. In the summer, many pack picnic lunches to eat along the park’s hillsides. However, one of the most popular times to visit is in the fall.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for a fabulous place to stay nearby then book your stay at Forks of the Credit Inn. It has trail access to the park!

Take a Fall Drive Along Forks of the Credit Scenic Road

One of the top things to do in Ontario in the fall is enjoying a scenic road trip! Caledon is full of scenic roads to take that offer sweeping views of fall foliage. In my opinion, Caledon is one of the best places to see the fall colours in Ontario!

Every fall I make at least one, if not more, road trips through Caledon! The most popular scenic road is Forks of the Credit Scenic Road! Running southwest from Highway 10 to the village of Belfountain, this road is a beauty! Full of curves it takes you through a historic hairpin turn and under an old rail bridge. You’ll pass by a winding river and Belfountain Conservation Area, all while being hugged by lush forests.

Three other great scenic roads in Caledon are Mississauga Road, Airport Road, and Old Base Line Road.

There are so many things to do in Caledon! So, if you’re looking to round out your getaway I’ve got a few more places to visit that you’ll want to add to your itinerary!

Stonewell Lavender Farm – Caledon is home to one of the best lavender farms in Ontario! Located in the town of Erin, Stonewell Lavender Farm is a small family-run farm. They offer small group tours through their lavender fields where you’ll learn about the historic farmhouse, how they distill the lavender and more cool facts.

Belfountain Conservation Area – Set in the wee hamlet of Belfountain, this park is filled with cool features and is also home to salamanders! Belfountain Conservation Area is home to a waterfall, a weird cave, a scenic suspension bridge, and part of the Bruce Trail. It’s a beautiful spot to hike but note that it is not open during the winter.

Plant Paradise Country Gardens – One of the most beautiful places to see flowers in bloom in Caledon in the summer is Plant Paradise Country Gardens. Located just west of Caledon East, this nursery and botanical gardens are award-winning! They are dedicated to environmentally sustainable growing practices. Along with their store, you can visit their stunning gardens for a small fee or try one of their guided tours from May to October.

Glen Haffy Conservation Area – Another seasonal park in Caledon to visit is Glen Haffy Conservation Area. The park is a popular spot for fishermen with its stocked ponds. However, it’s also home to a few hiking trails taking you through mature forests.

Other parks in Caledon to check out include Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area and Albion Hills Conservation Park.

Davis Family Farm – The Davis Family Farm is home to one of the best sunflower fields near Toronto. The farm is a great place to visit nearly all year long, with pumpkins in the fall and trees for Christmas or fresh eggs and farm goods year-round. But many flock here in July and August to visit their 45 acres of sunflowers. You can wander the paths, take sunflower selfies, and enjoy the perfect summer day here.

Downey’s Farm Market – Another popular farm to visit, especially if you’re looking to go apple picking in Caledon is Downey’s! For over 100 years, this family farm has produced a selection of fresh Ontario produce. They have a winery and bakery where you can find their signature pumpkin donuts and maple sugar candy. In the spring the run a festival for Easter. Throughout the summer you can go berry picking. Plus, it’s a popular spot in the fall for Pumpkinfest!

Where to Eat in Caledon

You’ll find a wide variety of places to eat in Caledon. The area is filled with amazing restaurants and cafes, as well as cideries and breweries. Depending on what you’re craving, there’s everything from fine dining restaurants to lively pubs.

Headwaters Restaurant

The award-winning Headwaters Restaurant can be found at Millcroft Inn & Spa. The restaurant is located within the old mill and has incredible views of Shaw’s Creek Falls as well as Mill Pond. The food at Headwaters Restaurant is made with sustainable ingredients and fresh foods from across the Headwaters region.

Every plate is created to stimulate all your senses. With impeccable presentation, fragrant aromas, and flavour profiles that excite your taste buds, every dish is a fabulous choice. You’ll find a varied seasonal menu. Like in the spring when the sap is flowing, there are maple-inspired dishes, desserts, and cocktails on the menu. My favourite maple creation is their Millcroft Signature Honey & Maple! It’s made with maple syrup and honey made on-site and is crafted in such a way that it looks like art!

Ray’s Third Generation Bistro

Another great place to eat in Alton is Ray’s Third Generation Bistro! Especially for those staying at the Millcroft, Ray’s is only a 10 minute walk away. This long-standing bakery has been in service since 1966. However, it’s also an incredible bistro that offers lunch and dinner.

They have a varied menu for both lunch and dinner that includes rosemary burgers, sandwiches, tender meats, and of course delicious desserts. When I visited I enjoyed the bruschetta to start, the special of the day was venison with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, and for dessert sticky toffee pudding.

Plus, if you’re dining in on a weekend you may even enjoy some live music!

Tin Roof Cafe

As I mentioned above, the Tin Roof Café in Erin is a fabulous stop for coffee! However, if you’re looking for a quick and light lunch then this is the perfect stop! They offer a variety of healthy options including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menu items.

One of their noted meals is their grilled cheeses! Many say it’s hands down the best! They have a wide selection of grilled cheeses, from the classic to an avocado pesto one! I’m a sucker for their baked goods, like their scones and almond butter vegan cookies!

Spirit Tree Estate Cidery

Another great foodie stop is Spirit Tree Estate Cidery. You may be thinking, but Steph, it’s a cidery. It is, but it’s so much more! Along with offering tours, cider tastings, and pick-your-own-fruit, Spirit Tree Estate has a Bistro! They’re best known for their amazing wood-fired stone oven pizzas! If you’re looking for a slice this spring try their maple bacon pizza.

You’ll also find an assortment of baked goods! I highly recommend their maple apple walnut scones and maple butter tarts! Other local goodies include maple syrup, maple butter, apples, cheeses, coffee, and more!

The Busholme

One of the best pubs in the region is The Busholme! The building was originally an Inn and built in the 1880s. The historic charm is preserved and offers a cozy yet refined vibe. Located in downtown Erin, The Busholme has a varied seasonal menu.

Everything at The Busholme is made fresh in-house, including their dressings and sauces. There are a dozen beers on tap, including local craft beers like Goodlot. You’ll find everything from pub classics to Buddha bowls. Whether you’re dining with children or have dietary restrictions, you’ll find something on the menu. I highly recommend their Mac & Cheese!

Plus, they have an outdoor heated patio and live entertainment!

Now, you’ll find a cozy inn with three rooms filled with antiques and pine plank floors. Our room even had a character-filled stone wall! Rooms come with comfy king beds, flat-screen TVs, and of course coffee machines! This is a great option for accommodation in Caledon if you’re looking for a quiet getaway or want to enjoy the many hiking trails in the area.
