About Thunderbird Farm
Thunderbird Farm is located in the Kawartha Lakes, approximately 20 minutes north of Port Perry and roughly 1 hour from the GTA. The property is home to a century old farmhouse and a number of old barns.
Owners Brooks and Laurie bought the property in 2022 and with Brooks’ background in renos and Laurie’s eye for design they transformed it into one of the coolest farm stays in Ontario that I’ve ever seen.
They offer a variety of experiences to add on to your stay. With Brooks’ Indigenous roots, experiences range from a traditional Indigenous craft workshop to archery.
The farm is also home to an array of animals. There’s a rambunctious group of goats, adorable alpacas, sheep, chickens and the sweetest turkey. Tending to and hanging out with this lot is an experience in itself!
And beyond traditional stays, Thunderbird Farm is a unique place to host a wedding. With a farmhouse an ideal spot for the bridal party to get ready in and a separate Carriage House that’s fun for the groomsmen with its bar, games, and lounge, it’s a memorable wedding venue. Plus, there’s a scenic spot for an outdoor ceremony and a massive century old barn for the dinner and party after.
You can also book Thunderbird Farm for your next retreat. I’d love to bring the ladies in my writers’ group here! Retreats include catered meals, a 2-night stay with workshops and more.

The Farmhouse
The spacious farmhouse is 3 stories and has 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and sleeps up to 14 guests. Each bedroom is unique, with names like the Sunshine suite, Woodland suite, and Cabana room.
On the ground floor there’s an incredible kitchen, stocked with everything you’ll need for your stay. A dining room with a beautiful blue antique table has room for everyone. The living room has plenty of seating, as well as a large TV and cozy fireplace. Plus, there’s a games room that’ outfitted with plenty of options for everyone from kids to adults.
On the top floor there’s another living space that’s perfect if you’re staying with kids or as a quiet space to retreat to. Plus, if you’re staying for an extended stay, there’s laundry facilities.

My Stay at Thunderbird Farm
I arrived at Thunderbird Farm on a chilly and rainy day in October but I didn’t let that dampen my excitement.
Immediately I was greeted by some friendly chickens and Brooks, one of the owners. He gave me a tour of property, including the massive century old barn that they use for weddings – which was stunning with the light peeking through the slates of wood. Plus, I love that it has a window looking out over the animals.
Next up, was a meet and greet with their friendly farm family that includes the sweetest Turkey, who’s name El Guapo means handsome in Spanish! The goats were all excited and raced to the fence, while the shy alpacas hung back. But they did warm up to me and ate out of my hand by the evening when I went to feed them.

Honestly, the animals are a big part of the magic of staying at Thunderbird Farm. Guests are tasked with tending to them, feeding them in the morning and night. While that may seem like a lot during a ‘vacation’ – this is a unique place and it’s honestly not that tough or time consuming. Plus, you can’t help but smile when they all come prancing towards you when you have their feed.
I was blown away by the large farmhouse that dates to the 1800s. With a staggering 3 floors, it’s been renovated to include all the luxurious amenities like modern bathrooms – of which there’s more than enough for everyone. But it still maintains all the cozy farmhouse historic charm to celebrate its past – like a large eat-in kitchen with exposed brick walls.
Also lending to its uniqueness, every room has its own theme and name! There’s one called Sunshine that literally looks like a ray of sunshine as the morning sun comes through the window. I also adored the Woodland suite that felt like an enchanted forest room.

One of the coolest features is a hidden staircase!! I won’t say too much, as I don’t want to ruin the surprise but it may be hidden behind a bookcase…
I think this is a great spot to stay in the fall. Not only will you find off-season pricing, but it lends to a cozy stay with its fireplace, comfy living room and the property is surrounded by fall colours.
Another highlight for me was their experiences. You can add a variety of experiences to your stay to make it that much more memorable. I opted to try the archery. It was my first time and Brooks was so generous with sharing tips and tricks. I loved it!
I loved my stay and think Thunderbird Farm is one of the best farm stays in Ontario as well as one of the most unique!

The living room has a fireplace that is perfect for cozying up by with book. And the bookshelf has a variety of books if you forgot one.
Or you and take full advantage of the large farm kitchen and do some cooking or baking.

Outdoor Activities
Whether you’re visiting in the summer, winter or fall, there’s plenty to do on the property. There’s an inground pool that’s perfect for cooling off in during the summer as well as a BBQ for grilling outdoors.
Try your skills at disc golf or enjoy a hike on the trail leading out to a section of the Trans Canada Trail.

Book an Experience
You can add on a variety of unique experiences at Thunderbird Farm. If you’re looking for something relaxing, try their yoga or on-site massage.
Or if you’re looking for something different, I highly recommend the trying out archery or the Indigenous craft workshop.
Another fun add-on is the Carriage House. This fun space has plenty of fun things to do inside. There’s a ping pong table, Foosball, popcorn marker, arcade game and a bar.

Hang Out with the Animals
One of the best parts of staying at Thunderbird Farm is that you can play farmer during your stay–but without the toiling hard work!
During your stay, part of the experience is tending to the animals. Every morning you’ll need to feed them; make sure they have water and collect the eggs.
But the reward is getting to hang out with them, like hand feeding the alpacas, or giving chin scratches to the goats.
