Great Restaurants in Gananoque from Water Views to Garden Patios

Gananoque often referred to as the gateway to the Thousand Islands. And when exploring the region, it’s where I always base myself. One reason is all of the incredible restaurants in Gananoque that are conveniently located within walking distance of downtown.

This small town is full of a diverse range of cuisines, so there’s always a place to eat to suit your cravings. There’s everything from Italian to classic Canadian pub fare. Another thing I love is that you’ll find restaurants with water views and others with beautiful garden patios.

On my yearly visits to Gananoque I’ve been able to eat at most of the restaurants in town. I have a few favourites that I return to again and again, like The Purple House Café, which it’s incredible pizza and dreamy patio. But I’m always trying out new places too!

With days filled with exploring the Thousand Islands, from boat tours to scenic drives, you’re going to build up an appetite. In this guide you’ll find all the best places to eat in Gananoque, from breakfast to lunch and dinner too!

the perfect dinner at Riva

Riva Restaurant

Tucked just on the edge of downtown Gananoque, Riva is one of my favourite spots to eat. It’s set in a beautiful historic building and I love the atmosphere! It’s both classy and cozy—with a fireplace, plush seating, and little touches that nod to the town’s boat-building past.

In the warmer months, the garden patios are a dream—surrounded by greenery and perfect for a relaxed meal outdoors.

The food? Incredible. Riva serves up modern Italian dishes that include classics like Pomodoro as well as unique seafood pairings. But you’ll also find options like steak, lamb, and pizzas.

For lunch, the menu features some of the Italian sandwiches you’ll ever have. Everything is made with fresh ingredients and packed with flavour.

Plus, their cocktail menu is spot on! I love that they have classics like Aperol Spritz, along with a list of non-alcoholic cocktails too!

Whether it’s date night or a special celebration, Riva is one of those places that always feels like the right choice.

Insider Tip: I highly recommend making a reservation for Riva, especially when visiting in the summer or on weekends.

The Purple House Café

Tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood between downtown and the water, there’s a purple house that’s home to one of my favourite places to eat in Gananoque—The Purple House Café. It’s got a fun, boho vibe inside, but what I really love is the garden patio. It’s full of flowers and greenery, and in the evening, the twinkle lights make it feel like something out of a movie.

The real star here is the pizza. They’ve got a funky wood-fired oven right on the patio and serve up everything from a classic margherita with basil from their garden to spicy sausage, vegan, and veggie options.

They’re also licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine, an Ontario craft beer, or a cider with your meal. And if you’re into coffee like I am, their fair-trade brew from Birds & Beans in Toronto is a must-try.

It’s cozy, charming, and perfect for a casual lunch or a romantic night out.

Insider Tip: Please note that The Purple House Café is open seasonally, May thru October.

Laverne’s Eatery

Across the street from the Town Hall is an old stone building that dates back over 150 years. Inside you’ll find one of the best cafes in Gananoque–Laverne’s Eatery.

This place is totally my vibe, with its quirky and cozy small dining room with mix matched chairs, old magazine print on the walls, and plants in the window sills. Plus, I love the patio on a warm summer day.

The menu at Laverne’s Eatery is all about the freshness! The use seasonal ingredients, free-range eggs, and real butter. Plus, they bake their goodies in small batches so you know their always fresh!

This is not your boring café food! They do weekend brunches that will wow your friends as well as sandwiches and salads that are next level.

My friend loves their quesadillas and I always grab one of their sweet or savory Danishes. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for a refreshing and light meal in Gananoque!

iced coffee and dessert at Pistachio Cafe in Gananoque
Pistachio Cafe’s awesome desserts pair well with an iced coffee

Pistachio Café

If you’re looking for a great coffee spot in downtown Gananoque, Pistachio Café is my go-to. It’s run by a brother-sister duo, Jen and James, who’ve created such a warm, inviting space. Inside, it’s cozy with exposed brick, lots of plants, and fun pops of colour.

Their coffee comes from North Roast in Kingston, and the drink menu has something for everyone. But it’s not just about coffee—they’ve got smoothies, soups, sandwiches, salads, and some amazing desserts, all made fresh daily.

All of the food at Pistachio Café is vegetarian. Plus, there are also plenty of plant-based options, which I really appreciate.

I love their raspberry sorbet smoothie with berries—so refreshing! I grab one for the drive home, every visit! They also serve gelato from Stella Luna in Merrickville, and it’s some of the best I’ve had.

In the summer, their big patio is the place to be. There’s even a summer patio bar where you can grab a glass of wine, a beer, or a cocktail.

Pistachio Café is more than just a café—it’s a community hub. They host events throughout the year, from live music to tastings. It always feels like something fun is happening.

Schnitzel and salad with Thousand Islands Dressing at the Maple Leaf Restaurant

Maple Leaf Restaurant

Maple Leaf Restaurant has been a go-to in Gananoque for over 35 years, and it’s easy to see why. It’s cozy and welcoming, and the food always feels like it’s made with love.

They’re known for their Czech dishes, and if you go, definitely try one—I had the best schnitzel I’ve had outside of Europe here! They also serve goulash and spaetzle, all made fresh from scratch, often with local ingredients.

If Czech food isn’t your thing, their menu has plenty of Canadian classics too, like burgers, club sandwiches, and seafood platters. There’s even a kid’s menu, which makes it a great spot for families looking for where to eat in Gananoque.

To drink, they offer local beers, European imports, wine, and some fun cocktails. Whether you’re visiting or local, Maple Leaf always feels like a comforting, reliable choice.

Panache Bakery & Cafe

Panache Bakery & Café is one of my favourite spots in Gananoque for a quick bite—especially if you’re planning a picnic or heading out for a hike. It’s takeout only, which makes it perfect for grabbing something fresh to go.

This family-run bakery on King Street is full of charm. The inside is painted soft yellow and baby blue, and it always feels bright and cheerful. And the smell? Fresh-baked heaven.

They make amazing sourdough, and I’m a big fan of their raspberry Danish, almond croissant, and sausage rolls. You’ll also find cookies, cakes, tarts, and all sorts of sweet and savoury treats at the counter.

They even have a fridge stocked with homemade soups, pies, and ready-to-cook meals if you want to bring a little comfort food home. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to try everything.

inside the Old English Pub in Gananoque
I love the cozy English vibe in the Old English Pub

Old English Pub

The Old English Pub is easily one of the best Gananoque pubs—and one of my favourite spots in town. With its cozy British theme, exposed brick walls, and even a little library room, it’s got tons of charm. There’s not a bad seat in the place, and the King Street patio, strung with fairy lights, is perfect on a nice day.

They’re famous for their fish and chips, and on weekends, they do a special for two that’s hard to beat. Other favourite menu items of mine are the shepherd’s pie, Yorkies, and bangers and mash. But there’s something for everyone—burgers, veggie pasta, even chicken curry—all made fresh to order.

If you’ve got room after your meal, don’t skip dessert. I love their sticky toffee pudding, but the crème brûlée and spiced apple crumble are great too.

And of course, it’s a great place to grab a drink. They’ve got a solid lineup of local Ontario beers like Gan Brewing and Flying Monkeys. Not a beer fan? Their specialty coffee list is worth checking out too.

I love the rice dishes at Pho Hut

Pho Hut

Pho Hut is one of the best restaurants in Gananoque for international cuisine. Thanks to their generous portions it’s one of my favourite spots for lunch before a long hike.

They serve a delicious mix of Vietnamese and Thai dishes, and you can really taste the authenticity—especially knowing the friendly ladies running it are originally from Vietnam.

The menu is huge! Some of my top picks are the Pad Thai, Pho, and the vegetarian vermicelli. My stir-fry was packed with fresh, crispy veggies, and for appetizers, I loved the spring rolls while my dad couldn’t stop talking about the crispy shrimp.

The staff are incredibly kind and always happy to help if you’re not sure what to order. Inside, it’s cozy with classic Thai-style touches, and in the summer, their front patio is a great place to sit and enjoy your meal.

Moroni’s Restaurant & Sport’s Bar

Moroni’s is another one of the best places to eat in Gananoque, and a personal favourite when I’m craving Greek food. This downtown spot serves up a mix of Italian, Greek, and Canadian dishes.

I love the fun Mediterranean touches inside—like lampposts and murals—give it a unique, relaxed vibe!

They’re open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the menu has something for everyone. I always go for the chicken souvlaki with Greek salad—it hits the spot every time. Other favourites include the chicken parmesan, fish and chips, steak and potatoes, and their pizza, which is seriously good.

You can sit inside or enjoy their side patio, which I love because it looks out onto one of Gananoque’s beautiful murals. Plus, being tucked to the side, it feels a little more private and quiet—perfect for a laid-back meal.

Stonewater Pub

Close to a number of Gananoque attractions, the Stonewater Pub is a great place to eat while exploring. If you’re looking for places to eat before the theatre, this is an ideal spot as it’s a short 5 minute walk.

The menu includes classic pub grub like burgers but a number of surprises too! My friend loves their fish tacos, but there’s also a vegetarian portobello burger and chicken and waffles too.

I love the quirky décor throughout, it’s full of antique, but I also love the views of the water.
