Where to Stay in Westport

When it comes to planning a getaway, you’ll want to book the best spot in town. I’ve got one that ticks all the boxes – The Cove Inn.

The Cove Inn dates back to 1876, but has been renovated to maintain all of its historic charm but with all the modern comforts you need. Located right in the heart of the village of Westport, with onsite parking, it’s an ideal location for exploring town and the area.

Welcome to The Cove Inn!

It has a restaurant, featuring fantastic fare, seasonal wine dinners, as well as a music series and annual events like Blues at The Cove and Westporch Festival. There’s a large indoor dining room but in the warmer months the waterside patio is perfect!

There are 12 guest rooms at the Cove Inn, a mix of queen suites, a room with two doubles, and all with modern ensuites. I love that each room has their own personality and name to match, many of which reflect the building’s history.

I stayed in the Fredenburgh, named after the original owners. It was a spacious suite with a comfortable queen bed, seating area with a desk and wardrobe, as well as a coffee maker and big bright windows with blackout curtains. And the bath had a rainfall showerhead, toiletries with a lovely scent, and quality toilet paper! (As someone who travels a lot, real toilet paper is always a welcome surprise at stays!)

This is one stay that makes you want to slow down and linger. Whether it’s reading in bed, hanging out on the porch and soaking in the views of the lake, or relaxing in one of the lounges. I loved all the different lounge areas!

Near my room was this plant filled, boho chic space that was an ideal spot to meet friends to chat or read. While the lobby feels like you’ve walked into Hemingway’s home, with a model ship, piano, stone fireplace and plush seating.

The Cove Inn has it all, historic charm, comfortable suites, onsite dining and entertainment and you’re steps shops, trails, and the water.

Hike Spy Rock Lookout

Who doesn’t love an awesome lookout!? One of the top attractions in Westport is the Spy Rock Lookout!

Located within Foley Mountain Conservation Area, a short drive from downtown, the lookout is great for a number of reasons. One being that it’s great for those who don’t have the energy for a long hike. And two, because the reward for little effort is an awesome viewpoint!

Literally a few steps from the parking lot, the Spy Rock Lookout only takes a couple of minutes to get to. After a short trail through the forest, you’ll find a boardwalk with a few stairs that lead to the sweeping view of Westport and Upper Rideau Lake.

If you’re looking to do some more hiking, the park is home to 10 km of trails. Many short, under 1.5 km.

There is a fee to park. It’s $10 for the day.

Browse the Shops

There’s nothing better than browsing local shops in small towns to help support the local economy. And I was thrilled at the unique range of shops in Westport.

You’ll find everything from clothing to shops selling fun gift ideas and local souvenirs. For the best sales and diversity, pop into the Village Green. It sells all sorts of things, from children’s books to clothing featuring Westport branding.

Another great shop is Starlet. Inside you’ll find a variety of pieces including women’s clothing, shoes, and entertaining items that will have you cracking a smile. Plus, there’s a fun photo-op that’s screaming for a selfie or shot of you and your girlfriends.

My Favourite shop is Pinecone. From the moment I entered this shop, I knew it was my kind of place! It immediately felt like I was at the beach, with cool tones and white shelves lined with colourful items. It has everything from jewellery to local books, home decor and lots of items that make fun gifts for friends. And yes, I did buy a few items for mine.

Plus, it has a secret garden out back that feels like stepping into a storybook with a little shed shop out back too.

Dine at The Cove Inn

While there are a number of great restaurants in Westport, dining at the Cove Inn is my top pick! It’s so easy to make a reservation for dinner during your stay, and you literally just have to walk downstairs for it.

If you’re dining at the Cove Inn during the nice weather, the patio is one of the big highlights! This waterside patio seat 100 people, has shade or sunny spots, and the best part is a small stage.

Yes, along with exceptional food (and the sweetest servers!) they offer live music every night! You can enjoy everything from local talent like Eric and Megan (with their fido Bowie!) to other Canadian artists. Eric and Megan put on such a great show during my dinner.

In addition to the awesome patio, there’s also a spacious indoor dining room. But when it comes to the menu, there’s no bad choice. I saw plenty of plates of salads, fish & chips and glasses of wine flowing.

I ordered the Peruvian chicken, that came with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. It was delicious and one of my best meals with summer!

Wander the Harbour

Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs on a little walk after dinner or want to explore more, the Westport harbour is lovely.

A few minutes’ walk from the Cove Inn; you can stroll the harbour or go sit and enjoy the lake views with an ice cream cone.

I was thrilled to find a cute concrete bridge that spans the water, connecting the mainland with a little island. The island has a short boardwalk, lined with boats. Plus, there are a few Muskoka chairs lining the shore on the opposite side for you to sit and soak in the views.

Visit a Winery

If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon activity then consider a visit to Scheuermann Vineyard & Winery. Minutes from downtown Westport, this family run winery is a lovely spot for a wine tasting.

As you drive up, I loved that you are driving right along their vineyard. And there’s a scenic overlook, with a fun photo-op picture frame by the tasting room.

Scheuermann Winery has three grape varietals, Vidal Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. You can enjoy a wine tasting at their bar or opt for a glass and lunch on their open-air patio.

I went for lunch and paired a glass of their Vidal 2020, that had delightful pear notes, with one of their wood-fired pizzas. And in my usual fashion, I ordered the classic Margarite, and it was delicious.

If you’re keen to try a unique pizza, I would try the Caliente. The server told me it’s one of their most popular and comes with chorizo, pineapple, chili drizzle and house made hot sauce. I’m definitely going to try it next time.

Grab an Ice Cream

The ideal stop on any summer day or warm fall evening is Spy Rock Scoop Shoppe & Café for an ice cream scoop!

The shop is located in the historic Lockwood General Store. I loved the cute retro vibe inside, with its checkered board floors and shelves lined with candy as well as other local products.

I also loved that they serve Shaw’s Ice Cream! This Ontario brand, that uses 100% Canadian Cream and is served across the province, and dates back to 1948.

They have a wide assortment of flavours, including a couple of vegan options. I couldn’t resist the rocky road!

Visit the Westport Museum

If you’re looking for indoor things to do in Westport on a rainy day or love museums, plan a visit to the Westport Museum.

Located right in the heart of the village, the small museum shares the history of the area. Starting with pieces from the First Nations who’ve lived on this land for years immemorial to unique items tied to Canada’s first Prime Minister, you’ll be surprised with what you find inside.

There are artifacts from the construction of the Rideau Canal and a special statue known as ‘Sally Grant,’ all tied to Eastern Ontario’s history.

One thing to note is that the museum is open from May long weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.

The Tipped Ship

A fabulous general shop that is a must-visit near Westport is the Tipped Ship. This unique shop in Elgin, is a short drive from Westport (under 20 minutes), and is filled with an assortment of pieces.

Set in a historic old general store that dates back over 100 years old, the Tipped Ship is my favourite kind of shop! It has everything from locally made products to vintage pieces, as well as new clothing, art and more.

I spent an hour browsing this unique boutique that is such a hidden gem! It was hard to not buy up the whole store, but I did purchase a local author’s book, an Ontario brand of spread that I can’t wait to use, and a fun top with birds on it.

If you’re looking for a coffee, pop into Julianna’s a few doors down. This cute café will soon be opening up a location in Westport.

Recess Cafe is such a fun spot

Recess Café

If you’re looking for a cute coffee shop near Westport, I recommend planning a visit to Portland. Located 20 minutes away, just outside of town is Recess Café.

Set in an old 1960’s school, this fun café has a school theme and retro vibe. I loved all the details, from strips on the wall that reminded me of my own school to the education cards that accompanied the check.

Another thing I loved was that they used local Ontario coffee – Detour. Oh, and the food! While they have baked goods, I recommend a meal. I ordered the Baked French Toast, topped with fruit, granola and local maple syrup. It was delicious!
