Where to See the Northern Lights in Muskoka

If you’re looking for the best place to see the northern lights near Toronto, Muskoka offers a spectacular escape to witness nature’s most dazzling light show. Just a few hours from the city, this region boasts several prime spots for stargazing and aurora viewing, with the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve standing out as one of the best places to see the northern lights in Muskoka.

As someone who is constantly exploring the Muskoka region, I’ve stumbled upon some amazing places to soak in the vast starry night. And many of these spots are perfect for aurora viewing! So, whether you’re looking for where you can see the aurora or an avid stargazer, this is your guide to the best spots.

Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve

One of the most popular places to see the northern lights in Ontario is Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve. This Muskoka gem became the world’s first, permanent Dark Sky Park in 1999.

Thanks to the incredible landscape of the Canadian Sheild and a large pond at its centre, the park offers 360-degree views of the night sky. Plus, with little to no light pollution in the area, Torrance Barrens is the perfect spot to go stargazing, take in a meteor shower and see the northern lights.

Another reason why it’s one of the best places to visit to see the aurora is that its free to visit. Plus, it’s a large park that covers nearly 2000 hectares (5000 acres). So, there’s plenty of room for visitors.

You can also camp for free at Torrance Barrens. However, there are no park facilities. Campsites are limited and on a first come first serve basis. So, you need to track out all your waste.

With all that in mind, it gets busy quick! Parking lots along Southwood Road fill up fast, especially if it’s a clear night and there’s a chance for northern lights. So, I have a few tips:

• Get there early
• Go to one of the other parking lots (there are more than the main one with the sign)
• If it’s full, move on to the next location

With so many other places in Muskoka to see the aurora, its safer to head to another spot than to park on the road. Southwood Road is narrow and windy through Torrence Barrens. So, parking along the road is dangerous, especially at night.

Algonquin Provincial Park

With its hundreds of lakes, epic hiking trails, and dark skies Algonquin Park is one of the best parks in Ontario. This massive park, cover over 7600 square kilometres offers countless spots to enjoy the night sky.

You can book a cabin, backcountry or car camping site, to let you take advantage of one of the top places for stargazing in Ontario.

In addition to stargazing, Algonquin Provincial Park is a great spot for seeing the northern lights. Thanks to its massive size, the sheer darkness that it offers is perfect for spotting the dancing purples and greens of the aurora.

Skeleton Bay Boat Launch

My go to spot for stargazing and any nighttime event, like the northern lights, is Skeleton Bay Boat Launch. Located roughly 10 minutes south east of Rosseau, it’s an incredible and quiet place to soak in the night sky without any light pollution.

The boat launch sits within a bay of Lake Rosseau, one of the best lakes in Muskoka to visit. It has a pretty long dock to sit out on and take in the sky. Plus, there’s a decent parking lot and I’ve never seen another person there at night.

Christie’s Mill Inn and Spa

If you’re looking for a place to stay where you can see the aurora in Muskoka then book at Christie’s Mill Inn. This lovely resort in Port Severn has everything you need for a perfect stay. There’s an onsite restaurant with views of the water as well as a spa. Room features include fireplaces, lake views, and whirlpool tubs.

The best part is that it sits on Little Lake and has two different docks that stretch out over the water in two different directions. These are prime aurora viewing spots thanks to their comfy Muskoka chairs.

Gravenhurst Muskoka Wharf

In addition to being one of the best places to visit in Gravenhurst, the Muskoka Wharf is one of my favourite places to see the northern lights in Muskoka. The Wharf hugs a bay of the sprawling Lake Muskoka.

With restaurants, shops and a scenic boardwalk, the Muskoka Wharf is a great spot to enjoy some stargazing or chase the aurora. You’ll find plenty of benches and places to sit along the Wharf, so that you can relax and wait for the magical light show above two of the iconic Muskoka cruise boats.

Insider tip: To get further away from the lights, take the Peninsula Trail out to the end of the peninsula. Here you can get an awesome shot of the aurora framed by the gazebo that sits at the end of the peninsula.

Muskoka Beach Park

Along with being one of the best beaches in Muskoka, it’s a prime spot for seeing the Northern Lights. Set along the southern shores of Lake Muskoka, a short drive from Gravenhurst, Muskoka Beach Park is a great place to visit in the summer for a swim.

Plus, Muskoka Beach Park offers ideal nighttime viewing for aurora thanks to its northern looking vantage point. This quiet spot is great for taking in the sunset, enjoying a bite to eat at the picnic table and waiting for the stars to come out.
