Explore Markham Village

A great place to start your tour of Markham is in the historic town centre, known as Markham Village!

Markham Village dates back nearly 200 years. The original settlers were Mennonites from New York. At that time the area was known as Reesorville. After a post office was built, the name changed to Markham.

This charming downtown feels worlds away from the bustling city around it. And along the main street you’ll find plenty of things to do in downtown Markham!

Markham Village is full of cute cafes, great boutiques, and plenty of history buildings. All along the main street are numerous information plaques sharing the history of Markham Village.

There are plenty of cafes and cute places to eat in Markham Village. For light fare and desserts head to It’s the Cat’s Meow Café and Roll Me Up Ice Cream. You’ll also find a wide range of restaurants serving everything from pub grub to Indian. A couple of my favourites are Main Street Greek and The Duchess of Markham.

I’m a sucker for used book stores and there’s one in Markham that I love! Alfsen House Books is a maze of towering books. The shops been around for 30 years and the building dates to 1893. The owner is passionate about books as well as art! You’ll see many of his pieces hanging around the bookstore.

Another great shop is Redefined Finds. In every town I visit, I’m always on the hunt for a shop selling local goods and this is a great one! The shop features over 25 local artisans selling a variety of goods. There’s everything from clothing to jewelry and fun tasty treats too! If you’re looking for fun things to do in Markham with friends check out their list of workshops here.

Markham Museum

One of the top fun things to do in Markham is visit the museum. The Markham Museum is not your average museum. It’s set on a 25 acre site and is home to a large modern museum as well as a number of heritage buildings

The museum is home to a selection of permanent and rotating exhibits. One is called ‘From the Ground Up’ and showcases a number of artifacts that have been uncovered right here on the museum grounds. Another great exhibit to learn more about the area is ‘What is Markham?’ The exhibit shares the stories of what has shaped Markham’s history over the last 100 years.

Behind the main building is the grounds where you’ll find over 30 historic buildings. Buildings include homes, a church, a blacksmith shop, the Locust Hill train station, and so much more! The oldest building on property dates to 1824.

Visitors can take a peek inside these historic structures and learn more about them. You’ll discover when they were built, where they were originally located, and more. Plus, during the winter you can snowshoe the property and search for animal prints!

And the museum hosts a variety of fun events and workshops throughout the year!

Travel tip: Take advantage of one of their guided tours to learn more!

Visit Unionville

My favourite place in Markham is Unionville! I’m a sucker for charming small towns and that’s the feeling you get when you explore Unionville.

Unionville is one of the most popular places to visit in Markham, and for good reason! It’s a heritage conservation district that was founded in 1794. The main street is lined with century homes and buildings. Plus, Unionville has a starring role in various television shows and movies.

Take a wander through town and explore the many sights. There are two old mills and a church built by the same architect that built Casa Loma. Plus, a number of restaurants and businesses are located in historic buildings. You’ll also find an art gallery and hiking trails.

A visit to Unionville is great any time of the year! However, I think it’s absolutely magical in the winter! If you’re looking for cute Ontario winter getaways that are close to Toronto, Unionville is it! The main street is decked out in holiday décor. There’s dazzling light displays, garland, festive photo-ops, and more!

Come hungry! Lining the main street are a bunch of great places to eat! For sweets head to the Old Firehall Confectionery and Flavours of Unionville for your summer ice cream fix.

When it comes to restaurants in Unionville the options are plentiful! There’s a flavour to suit everyone’s appetite. A few of my favourite are Il Postino and NextDoor Restaurant, which is located within the old planning mill.

And for those looking to stretch their legs, there are a few great trails in Unionville. You can take a short stroll around Toogood Pond. Plus, the Rouge Valley Trail runs right through town!

Travel Tip: There’s a small parking lot across from the Varley Art Gallery as well as a large lot west of Main Street.

Varley Art Gallery

For art enthusiasts like myself, you’ll love popping into the Varley Art Gallery in Unionville.

The art gallery is named after Frederick Varley, one of the Group of Seven artists. The last decade of Varley’s life was spent in Unionville. Here, he lived with friends Donald and Kathleen McKay. You can see their historic home, built in 1840, on Main Street. It’s now the McKay Art Centre.

Kathleen McKay donated her collection of pieces by Varley to the city of Markham after his death. And so, in 1997 the Varley Art Galley opened.

The Varley Art Galley is one of the many free things to do in Markham! Inside visitors will find displays that generally rotate every few months. Many of the artists the gallery showcases are local. However, they do display national and international artists too.

Home to close to 600 pieces by F.H. Varley, you’ll see various collections on a rotation. In the main hall is one of the gallery’s centerpieces, his easel. Their collection includes water colour and oil paintings, sketchbooks, and more.

During my visit they had an exhibit titled Field Notes. (On now through June 2023) It blends many of Varley’s sketches with the work of Toronto artist Winnie Truong. The sketches pair beautifully with Winnie’s drawings and animations of flowers and plants that hint at the feminine form.

Another incredible exhibit on now through April 2023 is by Toronto-based artist Sara Angelucci. The exhibit is titled Undergrowth and include three separate but inclusive collections. I love how she masterfully fuses historic and new images while bring attention to nature vs culture.

Varley Art Gallery also offers workshops and courses. And their art classes known no age, they are good for young children to seniors. Plus, they run lectures and often have family-friendly activities.

Toogood Pond Park in the fall

Toogood Pond Park

Markham is home to a long list parks and green spaces. One of the most serene parks in Markham is Toogood Pond Park.

In the mid-1800s a grist mill was built in Unionville. A dam was created to feed water to the mill and in turn the pond was formed.

Toogood Pond Park is an over 30 hectare park in Unionville. The park is an easy 5 minute walk from Main Street Unionville. It’s a lovely spot to visit any time of year! I highly recommend visiting in the fall!

There’s a roughly 1.6 km loop trail that circles the pond. It’s even home to one of the magical boardwalk trails in Ontario! Along with connecting with other trails in Markham, the park is also home to a Forest Therapy Trail. Following the Japanese practice of forest bathing, the trail helps visitors to connect with nature in a multi-sensory way.

On the west side of the pond is a lookout. The lookout offers sweeping views of the pond and the forest surrounding it. Plus, it’s beautiful in the fall with the colours reflecting in the water! There are a few other hidden little lookouts along the trail too. Keep your eyes peeled!

With so many great places to eat in Unionville, Toogood Pond Park is ideal to walk off some of the calories you’ve earned!

Travel tip: A free parking lot is located just south of Toogood Pond Park, on Carlton Road.

Go to the Theatre

Markham is home to three main theatre companies. And if you’re looking for fun things to do indoors or on a date night, head to a show!

The main theatre is FLATO. This large performance venue is home to over 500 classic red theatre seats. It’s located on the grounds of the Markham Civic Centre. So, if you’re looking for Markham date night ideas, head to the skating rink before enjoying a performance!

FLATO Markham Theatre puts on hundreds of shows a year. Their performances include concerts, comedy shows, plays, and more.

The Markham Little Theatre is another lovely one to check out. This award-winning community theatre group puts on a variety of performances. You can find them at their Backstage theatre on the grounds of the Markham Museum.

Finally, the Unionville Theatre Company maintains a focus on young performers. They’ve been performing for over 40 years and generally showcase classics. Past performances have been Wizard of OZ, Cats, and Beauty and the Beast. The theatre company puts on one musical each season and shows take place around the end of February.

Markham Fair

For over 170 years, the Markham Fair continues to be one of the top Markham attractions!

Established in 1844, it’s one of the oldest country fairs in Canada! The event takes place over 4 days on the Thanksgiving weekend. It’s one of the best fall festivals in Ontario!

The Markham Fair takes place on over 100 acres of former farm land. People flock form all over to the Markham Fairgrounds every year. Event goers will find a list of things taking place at the fair. A few favourite traditions include the demolition derby, giant midway, and tractor pull.

However, there’s plenty more fun activities that are fit for the whole family! There’s a kid’s zone, circus, freestyle motocross, and cooking shows!

Plus, to top it all off, the Markham Fair celebrates with fireworks display every evening!

Visit a Coffee Shop

Across Markham you’ll find some of the best coffee shops in the Toronto area! As a coffee aficionado, I love the cafe culture in the city.

Each cafe has its own unique style. There’s one to suit everyone, whether you’re craving a sweets and lattes or something cozy. Plus, the best part is that they are spread out across the city. You’ll find a few in Unionville. There’s a couple in Markham Village. And the others will likely be on the road to your next stop.

One of the best coffee shops in Markham is Starving Artist! This brunch spot is also an espresso bar. It’s best known for their waffles, because EVERYTHING comes on a waffle! In addition to great food and great coffee, they also support artists. Throughout the cafe you’ll see the works from various local artists, all of which is for sale. And the best part is that the shop doesn’t charge a fee, so the artists maintain all of their profits!

A few other favourites include Pod Coffee in Unionville, Monkey Hut Café, and B.P.M. Café in Cathedraltown. Plus, Markham is home to a coffee roaster too! Hatch Coffee is both a coffee shop and roaster. And if you wan to up your coffee game, they run workshops too!

For those looking for things to do in Markham this weekend, chances are there’s a festival or event going on!

Throughout the year, winter, summer, spring and fall, there are a ton of diverse festivals going on across the city! In addition, there’s also a variety of events too, like farmers markets and holiday markets. They also run in Doors Open Markham. This annual event allows the public to visit and explore some of the city’s places that are not generally open to visitors. They include both cultural and historical sites.

Music lovers will find a few different festivals taking place across the city. In the winter there’s Jazzicious. The festival celebrates music and food with live jazz performances at various restaurants. In the summer there’s TD Markham Jazz Festival in Unionville and Markham Village Music Festival.

Along with the Markham Fair, the city hosts another fall festival – Applefest! The annual festival takes place at the Markham Museum. This family-friendly event includes fresh apple cider, apple treats, live music, and train rides. Plus, admission to the event lets you explore the museum!

Markham is home to the largest Asian Festival in Canada, Taste of Asia! This three day event first began during the SARS outbreak in 2003 to help local businesses. Now, 20 years later, this epic festival features over 150 food vendors, and celebrates all things cuisine and culture. Taste of Asia runs at the end of June.

Another fun summer festival is Night It Up Asian Night Market! The event takes place in downtown Markham, every August. It features incredible Asian street food as well as live performances.

While Asian food dominates the Markham food scene, there are other international restaurants too! Enjoy the tastes of the Islands at Cravins Caribbean Grill or Stacy’s Island Flavor Restaurant.

Get Creative

Whether you’re looking for activities to do with kids or friends, Markham has numerous places to get creative!

As mentioned above, the Varley Art Gallery runs workshops and art classes. They offer a range for everyone from 4 years of age to seniors.

Hike Rouge National Urban Park

Rouge National Urban Park is the largest urban park in North America! It’s bigger than Central Park in New York as well as Stanley Park in Vancouver.

This massive park covers an area that reaches from Lake Ontario up to the Markham area. It’s home to historic and cultural sites, conservation sensitive areas, as well as a wealth of wildlife.

And thanks to its location in the Great Toronto Area, there are numerous day use areas to access. One of the day use areas is the Bob Hunter Memorial Park in Markham. This area is named after an environmental hero, Bob Hunter. He was an author and journalist who championed efforts to protect the environment.

Bob Hunter Memorial Park covers 500 acres (200 ha) of the Rouge Park. It’s located in the western area of Markham and allows hikers to explore the Rouge River valley.

There are three loop trails in Bob Hunter Memorial Park. The longest is the Monarch Trail, which is 7.6 km. Tallgrass Trek is a popular one. This 3.2 km trail takes hikers through wetlands, grasslands, and offers awesome views. However, one thing to note is that this trail lacks tree cover, so be sure to wear a hat in the summer. The other trail is the Reesor Way/Tanglewood Trail. This 3.3 km trail travels through a variety of habitats and is great for birding!

Travel tip: Sign up for one of their free guided hikes! The hikes take place all year long, generally on weekends. Hikes focus on a wide range of things include birds in the park, trees, and some are geared towards children too.

Pacific Mall

One of the top Markham attractions is the Pacific Mall! The Pacific Mall is a sprawling shopping centre with over 400 stores. It’s famous for being the largest indoor Asian shopping mall in North America!

I remember when it first opened and I’d visit and feel so excited for all the different toys and foods!

Visiting the Pacific Mall is still exciting! It’s filled with an array of small glass cubed shops. Each selling things like Chinese clothing, electronics, and jewelry.

The Pacific Mall is also home to an endless supply of Asian food shops as well as a food court. For fun Asian candy head over to Ding Dong Grocery. If you’re craving a coffee pop into Coffee Dak Lak for strong Vietnamese coffee. And for a sweet dessert visit Uncle Tetsu for Japanese cheesecake.

Inside there’s also a Heritage Town. This area is like walking through a China town in the mall. It features hundreds of Chinese lanterns, an emperor’s chair, and a wooden bridge called ‘The Lucky Bridge.’

And the mall hosts a variety of events. One of the biggest celebrations is for the Chinese New Year and features dragon dances and more!

Indulge in an Afternoon Tea

Step back in time with the British tradition of afternoon tea. Put away the phones, sip and chat like royalty at one of the three places in Markham serving incredible tea service.

One of the best Ontario tea rooms is located in the heart of Markham Village. The Old Curiosity Tea Shop has been serving afternoon tea for around 20 years. As soon as you step into the shop, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to England. The tea room features maroon walls, hundreds of teapots on display, and offers over 75 types of teas.

In Thornhill is another fun tea shop. After Queen Tea Shop has all the fixings for a fabulous afternoon tea! The walls are covered in vintage plates, tables are draped in lace, and plenty of China to cheers to. Plus, they also have an incredible Ontario-themed stained-glass window!

For a more elevated experience of afternoon tea in Markham visit Essence of Unionville. Known as one of the best restaurants in the city, it also offers weekend afternoon tea times. You’ll get three tiers of delectable pastries and savory items that wash down well with their selection of teas.

Tour Heritage Sites

Many people visit places and go in search of fun activities and cute shops. However, an important element to every place is its history. That’s why I always encourage people to explore historic sites. Unlike wandering around museums, standing in front of a historic place and learning about it makes it sink in more.

So, if you’re looking to learn more about Markham’s history, I highly recommend taking the Markham Village Heritage Tour. This self-guided tour brings you to 16 unique places in the village that help tell its story.

At each stop you’ll find a plaque sharing information about its history and its people. The first stop begins with the Indigenous communities in the Rouge Valley. Other stops include historic buildings, the railway, and places where significant events took place.

You can find the map and listings for each heritage site here.

Devour Delightful Desserts

Along with all of the coffee shop and restaurants, Markham is home to some of the coolest dessert shops!

Across the city you’ll find a dessert shop to suit your tastes! There are chocolate shops, ice cream parlors, bakeries, and more!

In Markham Village you’ll find T & T Bakery and Cho-Kwok-Lat. I was blown away by the incredible French pastries at Cho-Kwok-Lat. Plus, this café is a chocolaterie. Opened by a world-renowned Canadian chocolate master, they make all of their chocolate in house. I highly recommend trying one of their chocolate bars.

On Main Street Unionville you’ll find a few more great shops. One of my favourites is the Old Firehall Confectionery. They make a variety of truffles, hot chocolate bombs, and other fun sweets. I also recommend popping into Boréal Gâteau & Creamery. Forget about a traditional ice cream cone, they serve stunning ice cream cakes that look like little works of art!

One of the city’s hidden gems, when it comes to desserts, is Roji Monster Ice Cream! If you’re looking for things to do in Markham with friends then head to this place! It’s located in Langham Square, which is home to a ton of cool places to eat!

Roji Monster Ice Cream is not your usual dessert shop! Inside you’ll feel transported to Japan. They serve a wide array of foods and drinks. But they are best known for their monster ice cream! Yes, that’s the theme of this fun shop. Their desserts look like adorable monsters! Even the marshmallow latte comes with a little marshmallow monster to top it off! Everything is almost too cute to eat, but it’s also incredibly flavourful!

A few other top picks are Patisserie Fleur, Reign Dessert Café, and Panash Bakery.

Hidden Gems in Markham Ontario

Along with all the popular activities in Markham Ontario there are also hidden gems. Some are known by locals. And some you have to did a little deeper to find.

Suspension Bridge in Milne Dam Conservation Park crossing the Rouge River
Milne Dam Suspension Bridge crossing the Rouge River

Milne Dam Conservation Park

One of my favourite hidden gems in Markham is Milne Dam Conservation Park. Covering over 300 acres, it’s the largest park in the city.

Even though it’s flanked by busy roads, like McCowan Road and Highway 7, it feels like you’re somewhere other then in the heart of the city.

Milne Dam Conservation Park is built around the Milne Dam. But it’s now a lush park with forests, wetlands, and even a beach. It’s also popular with birders as it provides a safe space for migratory birds.

The park is home to a few kilometres of walking trails, many of which are paved or boardwalks. One of the trails winds its way to the large pond for a lovely lookout point. And it also connects to the Rouge Valley Trail that starts in Unionville.

The Rouge River flows right through the middle of the park. Where there’s a river, there’s a bridge. And Mine Dam Conservation Park is home to two really cool bridges!

The first is a hanging bridge. This short bridge crosses the Milne Creek and is surrounded by dense forest. The next bridge is a showstopper! The Milne Dam Suspension Bridge spans over 400 feet, over 65 feet above the Rouge River. It features an interesting fanned design as it curves across the dam. Along the bridge are staggered bump outs to provide lookout points on the north and south side. It’s honestly hard to say if the better view is from atop the bridge or from below.

Travel Tip: There’s a new fee to visit the park on weekends and holidays. However, it’s only a few dollars. And you can still visit during the week for free.

Explore Public Art

I’m always on the hunt for street art wherever I travel! I was surprised to find a wealth of public art across Markham. Art throughout the city comes in all forms. There are sculptures, statues, and murals!

At the Cornell Community Centre & Library there are two stunning murals. Each is done in a delicate blue and white colour scheme. Both showcase scenes of flowers. One is on the first floor and the other is on the second floor.

An interesting piece is located in front of the Markham Museum. Named Gambrel Journey, it represents the gambrel roofs that were traditionally built in the area. Standing 21 feet tall, the sculpture is made of steel and you can even walk through it!

One of the hidden gems is on the CN Bridge at the corner of Proctor and Henderson Avenue. On one side is a massive mural that showcases Thornhill. The style is inspired by J.E.H. MacDonald, a member of the Group of Seven, who lived in Thornhill. On the other side is a collection of mural panels and is inspired by natural surroundings.

Rouge Valley Trail in Unionville during the winter
Rouge Valley Trail in Unionville during the winter

Hike the Rouge Valley Trail

Markham is home to over 20 kms of trails. One of the cool trails in Markham is the Rouge Valley Trail!

Rouge Valley Trail starts at Toogood Pond Park in Unionville and continues south to Austin Drive Park. It follows the Rouge River and runs through a number of parks, including Milne Dam Conservation Area.

It’s still a relatively new trail and phase four is still in the works. But eventually the trail will run for 15 km, from Toogood Pond Park to Bob Hunter Memorial Park.

The trail is set to be multi-use, making it great for hikers and cyclists. Even though it’s not completed, it still offers a scenic way to explore some of the green spaces across the city. Plus, there’s plenty of sightings of deer, various bird species, and a few cool bridges!

Cathedral of the Transfiguration

For those like me who love architecture and stunning buildings then I highly recommend visiting Cathedral of the Transfiguration.

This church stands out in my memory as I remember driving by it when it was first built. Numerous times we would drive by this beautiful building that looked so out of place. Construction began in 1984, and back then, there’s was nothing around it. Now, it’s surrounded by Cathedraltown, one of the many communities in Markham.

The land that the church is built upon was donated by Stephen B. Roman. He was originally from Slovakia but moved to Canada and rose to be a leading breeder of Holstein cows.

The Cathedral is stunning both inside and out! There are three golden towers and the third one is over 200 feet tall! The tower has the largest peal of three bells in the world. And these bronze bells were cast in Annecy, France and weigh 32,000 pounds!

All three outer doors have mosaics above them. Plus, one of the key interior features is stunning mosaic that covers the entire dome of the Cathedral and spans 82 feet.
