Explore Downtown Picton

A stroll along Main Street is one of the top Picton activities! Along this main drag, you’ll find a ton of fabulous shops, restaurants, and cafes in town. I was totally surprised by the size of it! This small town packs a lot!

One place to check out is Rosehaven Yarn Shop. This adorable shop has a fun exterior with a bicycle covered in yarn. Plus, there’s a skeleton sitting out front with a sign reading, ‘My sweetie told me to wait here while they went into the yarn shop.’

Downtown Picton is also home to numerous historic buildings that are worth checking out! There’s the Naval Marine Archives, Picton Public Library, and the Armoury. The Armoury is a great place to pop into! Here, you’ll find a few shops and restaurants. Plus, it’s home to the Chamber of Commerce where you can pick up some Picton tourism information. Two other iconic buildings are the North American Hotel, built in 1835, and The Royal, built in 1881.

Beyond the shopping and notable buildings, there are other downtown attractions. If you enjoying browsing art galleries on your travels then you’ll be delighted to find two along Main Street. There’s the Arts on Main Gallery as well as another art gallery on the south side of the street called 2 Gallery.

Go Shopping in Picton

While exploring downtown, you’ll want to pop into all of the incredible Picton shopping spots! And there are many! Visitors will find a variety of shops in Picton, ranging from clothing boutiques to hand made goods.

As a book nerd I’m always on the hunt for fun bookstores in Ontario! I was delighted to find a big one in Picton, Books & Company. Plus, it has a lovely coffee shop attached to it, Lily’s Café!

One place I highly recommend visiting is The Ye11ow Studio! This local store is filled with beautifully made pottery. Plus, everything is made in shop and you can watch the potters work their magic behind the counter!

There are far too many shops to name here. However, I do have a few top picks! One is Field Made Goods, which is a women owned shop selling a variety of creative goods like ceramics and botanic items. For those who love Christmas all year long then head to Nickle’s. This shop has all sorts of gift ideas and a whole lot of Christmas décor!

The original Cooke’s Fine Foods and Coffee is in Kingston and dates back to 1865. However, there’s a location in Picton where you’ll find an assortment of kitchen wares, fine foods, and coffee too!

Visit a Café

I will gladly admit that I will drive hours to visit a new coffee shop! So, I was thrilled to find a few great cafes in Picton, each with their own unique vibe!

Beacon Bike + Brew – This coffee shop ticks all of my boxes! It’s cute, has awesome local coffee, tasty treats, and plants! Beacon Bikes & Brews is a fun blend of café meets bike shop. As soon as you enter, be sure to look down! Within the penny tile flooring reads County Up! The café serves coffee from roasters in Ontario and Montreal, a list of baked treats and light fare, as well as goods from local producers. Beyond coffee, they also have tea beverages, smoothies and beer. In addition, cyclist can get repairs and purchase bike gear.

Bean Counter – Another great spot for a coffee is the Bean Counter! Established nearly 20 years ago, this café serves a range of beverages, pastries, gelato, and sandwiches. Their coffee is locally roasted by Brad Lynd at County Roasters, who was the original owner! If you’re looking for a sweet treat, I highly recommend their signature blueberry scone, which are made in-house daily! Or if you’re looking for a sandwich, try one of their options that are served on a St-Viateur bagel from Montreal!

Lily’s Café – Tucked beside the bookstore, in the former Lipson’s Department store’s ladies wear section is Lily’s Café. They serve up a variety of fresh pastries that are made in-house as well as other light lunch items. Coffee is from local roasters, Pilot and Cherry Bomb coffee roasters from Toronto.

One of the many hidden gems in Ontario is in Picton! Birdhouse City is a collection of over 100 birdhouses, each representing a different building in Prince Edward County. This 40-year gem is located within the Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area.

There’s a trail called Memorial Walkway that winds around all of the quirky birdhouses. It’s under 1km and easy to complete. Each birdhouse is real and built to suit tree swallows, purple martins, wrens, and more. Be sure to keep an eye out for them!

Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area is set on 178 hectares. It’s home to over 20km of trails. Along with the Memorial Walkway trail through Birdhouse City, there are six other trails through the park. Trails range from 0.5 to 3.5km and take you through mixed forest and alvar habitats. There is a picnic shelter as well as washrooms.

Travel Tip: It is paid parking at the conservation area. However, you can easily walk to it from downtown Picton in 15 minutes.

Macaulay Heritage Park

One of the top Picton tourist attractions is Macaulay Heritage Park! This historic site is home to a variety of notable buildings including the Macaulay House, Church of St. Mary Magdalene and Parish Cemetery, and Carriage House.

At Macaulay Heritage Park visitors will be able to explore the heritage gardens, parkland, and buildings. Here you’ll learn about the area’s history, its people, and more. Within the old Church of St. Mary Magdalene there is now a museum. The museum is home to a permeant exhibit as well as a couple of temporary displays.

The permanent exhibit showcases the history of Indigenous peoples in Prince Edward County. You can also catch a cool demonstration of an ancient grindstone!

The Macaulay House is the main building here that was built in 1830 for Reverend William Macaulay. He was influential in many civic duties as well as in naming Picton.

Visit a Winery

One of the top things to do in Prince Edward County is visit a winery! With over 35 wineries, it’s rising up the ranks as one of the best wine regions in Canada!

There are plenty of wineries near Picton! However, if you’re looking for a wine tour then check out Prince Edward County Wine Tours! This four-seasons tour company offers public and private half day tours. They’ll drive you around to various wineries in one of their luxury vehicles. That way you can sit back and sip away! Huff Estates Winery

One of the largest and most popular wineries near Picton is Huff Estates Winery! This vineyard is home to an art gallery, Oeno Gallery, and a posh hotel. You can indulge in their high-quality wines indoors or out. Plus, they offer pizzas seasonally along with live music every Sunday in the summer.

Huff Estates has three different wine tastings that range from $10 to $50 per person.

Three Dog Winery

A favourite spot for locals and visitors, Three Dog Winery is a beautiful vineyard set on 10 acres. The winery is located 20 minutes north of Picton and has a large outdoor seating area! There are covered pergolas, a firepit, and live music on summer weekends! Along with serving up glasses of wine, you can enjoy a flight and their wood fired pizza or a charcuterie.

One thing to note is that they do not take reservations.

TerraCello Winery

This winery is one of the many hidden gems in Prince Edward County! It’s not as popular as many others but it has everything you’ll want! Located 10 minutes west of downtown Picton, TerraCello is a Tuscan inspired winery. Enjoying a glass of wine here is a slice of Europe in Ontario and will transport you to Italy! Along with incredible wines, like their signature Boca Nera wine, they also serve hand-made Italian pizza.

Please note that they do not take reservations and their patio is dog friendly.

Oeno Gallery

For those looking for things to do in Picton that will satisfy the whole family, head to Oeno Gallery! Established in 2004, this art gallery that’s conveniently located in Huff Estates Winery.

The gallery showcases contemporary and fine art by artists who are either seniors or mid-career. Visitors will find all sorts of mediums including sculpture and paintings.

In 2011, Oeno Gallery created a Sculpture Garden. This unique gallery space covers three acres. Along winding pathways are numerous large pieces of art by artists from the US as well as Canada. Among the art are gardens filled with things like sage and lavender.

Plus, if you’re travelling with kids, they’ll love the children’s zone! This fun feature is filled with interactive activities like a dino dig.

Regent Theatre in Picton Ontario

Along Main Street visitors will find one of the top things to see in Picton, the Regent Theatre! This classic Edwardian opera house opened in 1922. It’s the only venue designed specifically for movies and live performances in Prince Edward County.

After 100 years, the Regent Theatre continues to showcase a variety of performances including live music and theatre. Plus, it’s a fun place to watch a movie if you’re looking for things to do in Picton on a rainy day!

If you’re visiting during the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival be sure to check out the line up of artists performing at the Regent!

Fun Fact: The Regent Theatre was built on an 80-year-old foundation during its construction in 1918!

Everyone loves a lookout! Everywhere I travel I hunt for lookouts, whether it’s in Muskoka or Toronto! So, I was thrilled to find a lookout in Picton!

The Millennium Lookout is located south of Picton. It offers views of downtown and the harbour!

It was recently renamed the James A. Taylor Millennium Lookout. James A. Taylor was a lawyer and politician who also served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. In recognition of his service to the County the lookout is now named after him.

Delhi Park

If you’re visiting with kids and looking for a large park in Picton then head to Delhi Park. This large green space is home to a playground with jungle gym and swings. It’s perfect for kids to romp around and let off some steam.

Delhi Park is located just south of downtown and has various access points. Plus, for those travelling with dogs, it also has a large dog park!

Visitors during the winter will love the awesome tobogganing hill!

In addition, there are trails that link up with Glenwood Cemetery and Shadow Pond.

Why would anyone want to visit a cemetery? Well, I’ll tell you why. I find many of them fascinating places. Plus, the Glenwood Cemetery in Picton is so much more than a bunch of graves.

Set on 62 acres, this picturesque property is home to rolling hills, mature forests, and a pond. The cemetery is very park-like and has two walking trails and numerous sights along them. A few of the sights include the chapel, vault, bridge, and pond.

The Maple trail that takes you over hills and past many of the sights. While the other, Marsh Creek Trail is easy, avoids the hills, and brings you to Shadow Ponds.

Millennium Trail

If you’re looking or active things to do in Picton then hit the Millennium Trail. This 46km trail runs through Prince Edward County, from Picton to Carrying Place.

The Millennium Trail is popular for hikers and cyclists! It passes by vineyards and farmers’ fields as well as through forests. There are over 30 places along the trail where you can visit restaurants, wineries, and more!

You don’t have to complete it all in one go! Visitors will find various access points along the trail. One easy access point in Picton is from a parking lot at the corner of Lake and West Mary Streets.

Porky’s Place

I’m a sucker for unique finds and antiques! So, on my travels I always go in search of antique shops. One fun place is Porky’s Place.

Porky’s Place is across the street from Huff Estate Winery and is a must stop in Prince Edward County! It’s filled with unusual items, vintage toys, antiques, and so much more. You’ll find a ton of interesting gems within a heritage barn.

Along with wineries, Prince Edward County is home to a wealth of breweries! So, if you’re looking for something to whet your whistle, I’ve rounded up a few top breweries near Picton!

Fun Fact: In the late 1800s growing barley for beer was booming in Prince Edward County with one-third of the region devoted to the crop!

555 Brewing Co.

Located along Main Street in Picton, 555 Brewing is a popular spot in town! They have a large beer garden and patio where they serve up their craft beer. This microbrewery also dishes out awesome wood-fired pizza.

Prince Eddy’s Brewing Co.

A favourite of locals, Prince Eddy’s Brewing is located just north of downtown. Visitors can sip a flight of beers in their two-story tasting room that offers awesome views of their brewhouse. They also have a fabulous patio with a stage and beach volleyball court. YES, you read that correctly! Throughout the summer you’ll find a rolling convoy of fun food trucks to grab some grub to pair with your brews.

Parsons Brewing Company

On an idyllic plot of land just north of Picton is Parsons Brewing Company. It’s one of the most popular breweries in Prince Edward County!

This farm and brewery have over 17 beers on tap, so there’s something for everyone’s taste. Plus, they also serve local wine and cider.

Parsons has will feed you too! Along with classic beer pairing foods like pretzels and burgers, visitors will find a menu littered with Latin American cuisine.

If you’re visiting with little ones, they’ll love the playground and kids’ menu!

Queen Elizabeth Park

Another wonderful park to visit in Picton is Queen Elizabeth Park! On the east side of downtown, the park stretches along Hill Street.

Established in 1937, the park overlooks the marina and Picton Bay. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches. It’s ideal for the views as well as a lovely picnic!

Visitors will find a historic plaque in the park that celebrates the founding of Hallowell (what Picton was previously named).

Queen Elizabeth Park is also home to a fountain that commemorates the five tall ships that came into the Picton Harbour in 1984.

Restaurants in Picton

Picton is a small town but it packs in a lot of great places to eat! If you’re a foodie you’ll find a variety of cuisine including Italian, Chinese, classic North American fare, and more!

For those on a budget or looking for something light to eat check out one of the many cafes I mentioned above. The Bean Counter is a great option for a light meal that’s fresh with friendly prices. Another great place for something light is the Crepe Escape! This café is located within The Armoury and makes fresh sweet and savory crepes made with locally sourced ingredients.

A few other restaurants in Picton to try:

The Vic Café – This café serves up fun brunches in a stark white interior with various pops of colour! Plus, they have a nice patio!

The Acoustic Grill – Tucked just off the main street, this rustic tavern has a menu with classic pub grub like burgers, poutine, and appetizers.

The Lighthouse Restaurant – Set along the harbour within Picton Harbour Inn, this is best place to grab a solid breakfast in Picton!

The Royal – Whether you’re staying at The Royal or not their restaurant offers up an awesome menu! They have a bar and dining room as well as patio and secret garden space. You’ll find a variety of dishes on the menu, from breakfast to after dinner desserts.

The June Motel – The most popular hotel in Prince Edward County is the June Motel! With lake views, a Key West beachy vibe and pops of rosé, The June Motel is one of the most unique places to stay in Ontario! Instagrammable boutique motel offers guests a fun experience beyond their room. They have a plant-filled bar, garden, and host various events.

The Royal – Set within a building that dates to 1879, the Royal is located in downtown Picton. The hotel boasts elegant rooms and Scandinavian inspired studios. There’s also a pool, private terrace, library, spa, as well as restaurant and bar.

Loyalist Lofts – As one of the top-rated accommodations in Picton, Loyalist Lofts is set in a historic home that features three apartments. Each have a kitchen, seating area, and original highlights like high ceilings and crown molding. Plus, it’s located right off the main street!

Harrington House – This historic home, built in 1875, is one of the few budget-friendly places to stay in Picton. This adults-only inn has a seasonal outdoor pool, garden, and terrace. Rooms all have private bathrooms and include meal vouchers to either the Lighthouse Restaurant or the Vic Café.

Cute Blue Cottage – This adorable small vacation rental is only a block from downtown Picton. It’s spacious and comfortably sleeps two. There’s a full kitchen, seating area, and covered porch. Plus, it’s a stellar deal with the average night being $150.

Sandbanks Provincial Park

One of the top attractions in the region is Sandbanks Provincial Park! This provincial park is perfect for those looking for day trips from Picton as it’s only a 15-minute drive away.

The park is located on Lake Ontario and is home to some of the best sandy beaches in Ontario! There are three main beaches including Sandbanks Beach and Dunes Beach. Outlet Beach has shallow waters and is ideal for families.

Other popular activities in Sandbanks are hiking and birding. It’s a hotspot during migration in the spring and fall. Plus, there are 6 different hiking trails with varying lengths (2 to 7km).

Visitors can camp in the park or enjoy cottages that are available to rent throughout the year.

Flossie’s Sandwiches

I highly recommend stopping at Flossie’s Sandwiches! This awesome food truck is located beside Carson’s Garden Market.

They serve up epic sandwiches, burgers, fries, and more! All ingredients are sourced locally, making for a fresh feast! This is classic farm to table!

A couple of must-try menu items are the Gillingham Burger, which is made from water buffalo, and their My Girlfriend is Not Hungry, which is a selection of mac and cheese balls with seasoned fries. However, you’ll be satisfied with anything you order!

There’s a wonderful patio with plenty of picnic tables for you to devour your meal.

Beyond the food is a fun and friendly team! And the man behind them is Kyle, the owner, who is a wonderful human!

Fun Fact: Flossie’s is named after Kyle’s beloved grandmother who strangely was anything but a cook!

Sandbanks Estate Winery

Another favourite winery is Sandbanks Estate Winery. Located on the Loyalist Parkway along Lake Ontario, this is a great stop to sit and sip award-winning wines with incredible views.

Sandbanks has indoor and outdoor tastings available as well as tours. There’s also a food truck on-site, Shoreline Bistro, that serves up perogies, tacos, fries, and churros!

Reservations are not required however, they are recommended.
