There’s a place in Eastern Ontario that should be on everyone’s radar! That destination is Prince Edward County! However, I highly recommend planning a Prince Edward County road trip for so many reasons that go beyond the popular. While many head to this region for the plethora of wineries and beaches in the summer, there’s so much more to discover! After a few visits I’ve rounded up the ultimate list of things to do in Prince Edward County!

If you aren’t a fan of booze or beaches you’ll still find a ton of fun things to do in Prince Edward County Ontario! The County, as it’s affectionately referred to, has something for everyone’s interests, from charming small towns to epic hikes. It also is a must addition to a Toronto to Ottawa drive itinerary, as it’s nearly the halfway point.

Plus, foodies will rejoice with the volume of fabulous restaurants and cute food stops. Whether you’re planning a day trip from Belleville or a few days in the county, this travel guide shares everything you’ll need to know.

Explore Picton

One of the most charming small towns in Ontario is in Prince Edward County! Picton is the most popular town in the county for a multitude of reasons. Visitors will find a variety of places to stay, cafes, restaurants, and plenty of things to do in Picton!

Along the picturesque downtown stretch are a variety of interesting shops. There are also a few of Prince Edward County’s historic landmarks too, like the Armoury.

Plus, you’ll also find some hidden gems in Picton! For architecture nuts, like myself, head to the Picton fairgrounds to see Crystal Palace. This over 130-year-old building is now a grand event space. It was built in the image of the original in London, England. It’s said to be one of the last remaining Crystal Palaces built during the Victorian era in North America.

Visit a Winery

Known as one of the best places in Ontario for wine, it’s no surprise that one of the top things to do in Prince Edward County is to visit a winery! Rising up the ranks for top wine regions in Canada, visitors will have their pick from over 35 Prince Edward County wineries!

For those who don’t have a designated driver, you’re in luck! Check out Prince Edward County Wine Tours. You can indulge in a wine tour all year long. They’ll drive you around to various wineries in one of their luxury vehicles. That way you can sit back and sip away! Check out their list of tours here.

Sandbanks Estate Winery

Set along the shores of Lake Ontario, Sandbanks Estate Winery is a favourite among Prince Edward County wineries! The Sandbanks Winery offers a variety of wine tastings, both indoors and in their large outdoor picnic area.

Enjoy a flight of 5 wines from their award-winning wine menu. Or you can pop in to relax with a single glass. Plus, they have a seasonal food truck to pair some tasty eats with your wine.

Huff Estates Winery

One of the largest and most popular wineries in Prince Edward County is Huff Estates Winery! This vineyard is home to an art gallery, the Oeno Gallery, as well as a hotel.

You can enjoy their high-quality wines indoors or out. Plus, they offer pizzas seasonally along with live music every Sunday in the summer.

Huff Estates has three different wine tastings that range from $10 to $50 per person.

Three Dog Winery

A favourite spot for locals and visitors alike is Three Dog Winery! This beautiful vineyard is set on 10 acres. The winery is located 20 minutes north of Picton and has a large outdoor seating area! There are covered pergolas, a firepit, and live music on summer weekends! Along with serving up glasses of wine, you can enjoy a flight and their wood fired pizza or a charcuterie.

TerraCello Winery

This winery is one of the many hidden gems in Prince Edward County! It’s not as popular as many others but it has everything you’ll want!

Located 10 minutes west of downtown Picton, TerraCello is a seasonal Tuscan inspired winery. Visitor can enjoy a glass of wine while feeling like they’ve found a slice of Europe in Ontario! Along with incredible wines, like their signature Boca Nera wine, they also serve hand-made Italian pizza.

Sandbanks Provincial Park

Along with the wineries, a big attraction in The County is Sandbanks Provincial Park! It’s also one of the best Ontario provincial parks!

The park is set along Lake Ontario is known to have some of the best beaches in Ontario! Visitors will find three main beaches, Sandbanks Beach, Dunes Beach, and Outlet Beach. Known for its shallow waters, Outlet Beach is ideal for families.

If you’re looking for great places to camp in The County, consider reserving a spot at Sandbanks! However, if you are keen to visit in the summer you’ll have to book far in advance. Plus, for those wanting something more comfortable, Sandbanks also has cottage available to rent throughout the year.

Beyond camping and beaches, Sandbanks Provincial Park activities include hiking and birding. Sandbanks is home to 6 hiking trails that vary in length. Though, if you only hike one, I recommend the Dunes Trail! This 2.5 km trail gives you a great overview of some of the park’s various landscapes.

Travel Tip: If you’re visiting in the fall and looking for things to do in Prince Edward County October, I highly recommend visiting Sandbanks! You’ll find awesome fall colours and very few other visitors.

Hit the Beach

Planning a Prince Edward County road trip in the summer? Then you’ll want to hit up one of the many incredible beaches across the county!

As one of the top things to do in Prince Edward County in the summer, crowds flock to its pristine sandy beaches. Whether you’re looking to relax and soak in the sun or dive in for a refreshing swim, there’s a beach for you!

As mentioned above, there are three great beaches in Sandbanks Provincial Park. But they can get very busy. So, if you’re looking for an alternative nearby then head to Wellington Rotary Beach.

Another popular spot to hit the beach is North Beach Provincial Park! Known by locals as a great substitute for Sandbanks, North Beach is home to two beaches that you can swim at.

There’s also another hidden gem of a beach! At the Point Petre Wildlife Conservation Area adventurers will find a lovely rocky beach. The water is clear but can get very rough, which is always the case on Lake Ontario. However, the road leading out the Point Petre is very rough.

Millennium Trail

Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Millennium Trail! The trail runs 46 kms across Prince Edward County, from Picton to Carrying Place.

The Millennium Trail is popular for hikers and cyclists! It’s a great way to explore The County! Along the trail you’ll pass by vineyards, farmers’ fields as well as through forests. There are over 30 places along the Millennium Trail where you can visit restaurants, wineries, and more!

You don’t have to complete it all in one go! There are various access points along the trail. One easy access point in Picton is from the parking lot at the corner of Lake and West Mary Streets.

Birdhouse City in Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area

Within the Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area, just a short 15-minute walk from downtown Picton is one of Ontario’s hidden gems!

Birdhouse City is a collection of over 100 birdhouses, each representing a different building in Prince Edward County and other iconic places. Visitors will find a trail, Memorial Walkway, winding through the park where all the quirky birdhouses are found. The trail is roughly 1km.

These birdhouses are actually birdhouses! They are built for a variety of birds, including tree swallows, purple martins, and wrens. So, be sure to keep an eye out to spot them too!

Along with the trail through Birdhouse City, Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area is home to six more trails. The park is set on 178 hectares of woodlands and alvar habitats, as well as a creek running through it. It’s a great spot to visit for a hike or for a picnic! Plus, it offers awesome fall colours in the autumn!

For bird nerd like myself, if you’re looking for free things to do in Prince Edward County then head to the bird observatory!

Located on the southeast corner of The County, the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory is a nature reserve that covers 560 hectares. Unlike many of the other provincial parks in the area, this one is free to visit.

Established in 1978, it’s now a National Wildlife Area and one of 70 Important Bird Areas in Ontario. Other IBAs include Point Pelee National Park and nearby Presqu’ile Provincial Park.

The area sees over 100 species of migrating birds. It’s also one of the most successful permanent banding stations in Canada! A great time to visit is during the spring or fall migration. In the spring, they host the Spring Birding Festival offers a variety of events, guided hikes, and banding. In the fall, visitors can get tickets to view the saw-whet owl banding.

All nature lovers will appreciate this Prince Edward County hidden gem! The area, known as Prince Edward Point, reaches out 10 km into Lake Ontario. On the road towards the point is an awesome lookout. Plus, there’s a beach, scenic harbour, and lighthouse!

You’ll also find a lovely trail behind the Observatory buildings. The John Rymes Memorial Trail winds through the forest and has various off-shoots where they set up the nets for banding.

Wellington Rotary Park

Another great little town in Prince Edward County is Wellington! With a central location in the county and right on the shores of Lake Ontario, it’s a great place to stay and explore from.

Along with a great location, there is a wealth of things to do in Wellington! Visitors can browse the cute shops or indulge in ice cream, craft beer, and great restaurants. Wellington is home to one of the largest waterfront patios in Prince Edward County, which can be found at North Docks Kitchen.

There’s also a beach, the Wellington Heritage Museum, art galleries, and lovely Rotary Park with epic views! At the end of the park are steps that lead down to the rocky shores. Also, in town is one of the oldest homes in Ontario, built in 1786! And if you love street art like I do be sure to check out the west side of the paint store. This side of the building has a fun wing mural!

Plus, just outside town are two great hidden gems in Prince Edward County! One is Millefleurs Lavender farm and the other is Carson’s Garden and Market!

Browse Antique Shops

If you’re like me and love wandering antique shops then you’ll be delighted to know there are plenty in The County! Along nearly every county road is visitors will find one of many antique shops in Prince Edward County.

Two famous places in the county are Porky’s Place and Dead People’s Stuff. Porky’s Place is conveniently located across from Huff Estate Winery and is as quirky inside as it is out. Sadly, after over 15 years Dead People’s Stuff is now permanently closed as the owners are moving on to new adventures

The County is full of other great shops where you’ll find retro gems and antique treasures! A couple of other top picks are Bent Barn PEC, Retrospective in Bloomfield, County Rust in Wellington, and Union Label Vintage in Hillier.

For an off the beaten path shop, on the way out to Long Point is Collier Collection Antiques. Another hidden gem can be found in Cherry Valley, close to Sandbanks. That gem is Stowaway Vintage!

Explore Prince Edward County Museums

Whether you’d like to learn more about the history of the area or looking for things to do in Prince Edward County on a rainy day, consider visiting one of the museums. There are a handful of museums in Prince Edward County, all with their own story to tell!

Mariners Park Museum

An interesting place to learn about the area’s connection with its surrounding waters is the Mariners Park Museum. Located in South Bay, Mariners Park explores the county’s fishing, ship building, rum running, and other history on its waters. Plus, visitors will see various treasures found within the many shipwrecks off the coast of Prince Edward County!

There’s also a lighthouse that was relocated from a nearby island as well as Fort Kente, which is a replica of an 1812 War-era fort.

Macaulay Heritage Park

Right in Picton is one of the county’s most popular museums. The Macaulay Heritage Park is a historic site and home to a variety of notable buildings that include the Macaulay House, Church of St. Mary Magdalene and Parish Cemetery, and Carriage House.

Within the old Church of St. Mary Magdalene visitors will find a museum. The museum is home to a permeant exhibit as well as a couple of temporary displays. The permanent exhibit showcases the history of Indigenous peoples in Prince Edward County.

Rose House Museum

In the cute village of Waupoos is the Rose House Museum. Set in a historic home that dates to the early 1800s, the museum was the home to five generations of the Rose family. Now, visitors will find exhibits about the what rural life was like in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Wellington Heritage Museum

Right in the heart of downtown Wellington is a Heritage Museum. The building was first a Quaker Meeting House, built in 1885. Now, the museum showcases exhibits about local history as well as Quaker history in the area.

Plus, be sure to pop around the back of the museum. Here, you’ll find a lovely garden, walkways, and more!

Visit Bloomfield

One of the cutest small towns in Prince Edward County that will steal your heart is Bloomfield! Located in the heart of the county, Bloomfield is a small community that has a lot to offer!

Visitors will find a surprising number of things to do in Bloomfield! There’s a thriving art community, so you’ll discover a variety of galleries. One of which is a fun find! Hand Works-Tammy Love is a fusion of art gallery meets roadside attraction. Plus, it’s also an Airbnb! If you park in the lot just east of downtown Bloomfield, it’s just across the street and to the right.

Bloomfield is also full of quirky shops, including antique shops like Casa Lucia and Retrospective. If you’re hungry you’ll be thrilled to find some wonderful restaurants, cafes, and the county’s best homemade ice cream from Slickers!

Another hidden gem in Bloomfield is The Saylor House Café! Tucked off the main road in a historic shed is one of the best breakfast spots in Prince Edward County! They serve up fabulous baked goods, an assortment of sandwiches, soups, and more. Max, the terrier pup will be there to welcome you. And if you’re visiting on a nice day, I highly recommend dining on their garden covered patio!

Scattered around town are numerous interpretive history panels. Each shares the history and the people behind Bloomfield. They are a great way to explore Bloomfield and learn more about its past.

Little Bluff Conservation Area

Often overlooked for the more popular provincial parks, Little Bluff Conservation Area is a must visit! The park covers 28 hectares in the South Bay area, in the southeastern corner of the county.

There are a variety of short trails that wind through the park, each offering something fantastic! Known for its towering limestone cliffs, there’s also a picturesque stone beach, a significant wetland that’s home to birds and rare plant species, and the remains of an old grain storage building.

Be sure to hike to the Bluff Lookout, wander the stone beach, and visit the historic site from the county’s ‘Barley Days.’

Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park

Nearly 200 feet above Lake Ontario sits one of Ontario’s smallest provincial parks! Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park is small but is a must stop on a Prince Edward County road trip!

You’ll be rewarded with not one but two epic views of two different lakes. In the main parking lot visitors will find themselves almost 200 feet above Lake Ontario. Here, you’ll get sweeping views of the Bay of Quinte and if you time it right, the Glenora Ferry passing through.

On the other side of the road is a short boardwalk trail with views of Lake on the Mountain! This serene lake is popular in the summer as visitors can pop their canoe or kayak in and tour around. But please be aware of the private residences around the shores.

The park is a great spot for a picnic or you can dine at The Miller House Café & Brasserie that offers a patio with views overlooking the water.

You can plan your entire road trip around all the amazing lookouts in Prince Edward County! One of them is Rutherford-Stevens Lookout.

The lookout is located ten minutes east of Picton, along County Road 13 between Waupoos and Black River. Just around a bend in the road you’ll spot a small dirt parking lot.

Rutherford-Stevens Lookout consists of an elevated viewing platform. The view is beautiful and includes Smith’s Bay and Waupoos Island!

Visit Local Foodie Stops

As many of you know, I’m a huge supporter of eating local! So much so that a friend and I created Eat Local Ontario, where we highlight hyper local foodie spots, craft breweries, and more! So, I was delighted to discover a wealth of local food stops across Prince Edward County. (Much like the many farm gates in Perth County!)

Across the back roads of Prince Edward County are a large number of farm gates. Also known as farm stands, these are usually in the form of small open sheds or tables where those passing by can stop and purchase farm goods. In The County you’ll find stands selling maple syrup, pumpkins, baked goods, and more!

A favourite one is Waupoos Tarts! Located along the main round in Waupoos, this small shed is filled with interesting art and images. Plus, there are fridges full of butter tarts! And dare I say, they are some of the best butter tarts in Ontario!

A couple of other must-stops for local food are Black River Cheese and Fifth Town Artisan Cheese.

Travellers will also find a few great food trucks in Prince Edward County. My favourite is Flossie’s! Serving up epic sandwiches at Carson’s Garden + Market, and all made with local meats and produce! You’ll find good food and good times here! However, they are only open seasonally (like most food trucks) but are opening a shop in Belleville.

For a food truck that will whet your whistle head to Old Salt Cocktails! Close to Sandbanks, this mobile cocktail bar serves up tasty cocktails as well as gourmet hotdogs.

Travel Tip: Be sure to travel with cash as many roadside farm stands only take cash. A few take e-transfer though.

Base 31

One of the most unique things to do in Prince Edward County is to visit Base 31. Located just outside downtown Picton, Base 31 is a former WWII airbase.

Once known as Camp Picton, this 700-acre site has a long and interesting past. With many of the original buildings still intact, it’s said to be one of the last sites of its kind.

Now, Base 31 is under new management and is rising up as one of the coolest attractions in Picton! The massive site and its structures, including hangers and drill hall, are being carefully restored and protected. Plus, within many of the buildings, visitors will find a variety of businesses, like a pottery studio, yoga studio, and more. There are also a number of art galleries in the old barracks.

Base 31 is a great event space and puts on various concerts throughout the year. In another building is Escape Camp Picton, an escape room!

For those wanting to learn more about the site’s history, stories, and more there are tours on Saturdays in the summer.

North Beach Provincial Park

A great alternative to Sandbanks is North Beach Provincial Park! Located in the northwestern portion of The County, North Beach is a spectacular park and home to dunes and sandy beaches.

There are two main beaches at North Beach Provincial Park. One is on the Lake Ontario side and the other is on the North Bay side. North Bay beach has warmer waters and is much calmer. The Lake Ontario beach is larger and is over a kilometre in length.

Along with enjoy a perfect day at the beach, the waters are great to get out on too! There’s a small boat launch on the bay side that’s ideal for canoes or kayaks.

Travel Tip: Be mindful, the waters of Lake Ontario are known to create an undertow on windy days. Plus, at North Bay beach there is a drop off.

Pick Your Own in Prince Edward County

For those looking for fun family things to do in Prince Edward County visit one of the pick your farms! With a wealth of awesome growers in The County, a bunch offer pick your own!

In the summer you can visit one of the many blueberry patches, like Waupoos U-Pick Blueberries. Enjoy time in the fields and pick your own fresh blueberries.

A great place to visit in the summer is Campbells Orchards & Country Market! This over 50-year farm has a ton of things to do for the whole family, or even on a date! They have an animal petting area, kids’ playground, fresh baked goods and more! In the summer you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries, and even black currents!

Campbells Orchard is also an amazing place if you’re looking for things to do in the fall in Prince Edward County Ontario! You can enjoy wagon rides, a corn maze, and indulge in some hard cider. Plus, you can pick your own apples, field tomatoes, and pumpkins.

Ameliasburgh Heritage Village

For those looking for more places in Prince Edward County to learn about its history then head to Ameliasburgh Heritage Village. In the village of Ameliasburgh is a wonderful place to step back in time.

The heritage village began with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which was built in 1868 and boasts the tallest church spire in Prince Edward County. It’s now a living history museum with a mix of other historic buildings. There’s a log cabin, carpenter’s shop, general store, and more!

Visitors can wander the grounds and buildings and even check out a blacksmith shop that’s still in operation! Other quirky pieces at the Ameliasburgh Heritage Village include an 18-foot flywheel and a collection of taxidermy. The de Vries Natural Heritage Collection consists of almost 500 specimens that range from birds to mammals. It’s even noted as one of the best private collections of taxidermy in Ontario.

Explore the Arts

Another awesome addition to your Prince Edward County road trip is the PEC Arts Trail! If you enjoy exploring art galleries then this is the tour for you!

The Prince Edward County Arts Trail is a self-guided tour that brings you to over a dozen art galleries across the county. You can download the Arts Trail Guide and Map or pick up a brochure from various locations, like The Armoury in Picton.

Along the road you’ll see blue signs that are at each location. Art along the trail is a wide assortment of galleries with all sorts of mediums, from paintings to glass. There’s also ceramics, photography, woodwork, and more. Most of the piece are available for purchase and come in a range of price points.

Plus, if you browse the galleries ahead of your visit you’ll find many offer workshops, lectures, and other fun events.

Travel Tip: Check each gallery’s times for opening before you visit.

Visit a Brewery or Cidery

Along with wineries, The County is home to a wealth of breweries and cideries! So, if you’re looking for something to whet your whistle, I’ve rounded up a few top watering holes!

For breweries in Prince Edward County head to Midtown Brewing Company in Wellington and Lake on the Mountain Brewing Company. One of the most popular is Parsons Brewing Company!

For cideries in The County head to Loch Mór Cider Company in Hillier and Crimson Cider Company in Picton. One of the most popular is The Country Cider Company!

Millennium Lookout

One of the best lookouts in Prince Edward County is Millennium Lookout! The lookout is located just south of Picton. Here, you’ll find a large greenspace that overlooks The County, downtown Picton, and even the harbour.

Moses Hudgin Log House

Near Long Point, in the southeaster corner of The County is a hidden historic gem! The log home is one of the many historical landmarks in Prince Edward County. Three generations of the Hudgin family lived in this log home, the first was Moses Hudgin and his wife.

Now it’s on land owned by the Nature Conservancy Canada and known as the Hudgin-Rose Nature Reserve. Sadly, it was in disrepair but with fundraising and donations they are working on a complete restoration.

They are working to make it a three-season Field House for South Shore nature studies. Plus, it will have a small museum dedicated to the Hudgin family.

SHED Chetwyn Farms

In Hillier is another fun place in The County! SHED Chetwyn Farms is an alpaca farm with a lovely shop that’s housed in an old chicken coop.

The farm offers a variety of experiences that include alpaca yoga sessions, workshops, farm stays, and more! Even if you don’t try one of their fun experiences you can still pop by the shop and watch the alpaca graze in the fields.

The SHED is full of fabulous items made from their locally spun alpaca yarns. There are alpaca throws, socks, gloves, handbags, and more!

Visit Prince Edward County Lavender

One of the best things to do in The County in the summer is visit a lavender field! And Prince Edward County Lavender is one of the top lavender farms in Ontario!

This wonderful lavender farm is located in Hillier. You can visit the farm when the flowers are in blooms and wander the rows of lavender. They also have a great shop that’s filled with products made from their lavender. Items include lavender body care, essential oils, as well as culinary products that have a touch of lavender.

Where to Eat in Prince Edward County

The County is a foodie’s dream! With a wealth of farms, wineries, and eateries dedicated to promoting local fare you’ll find a long list of great restaurants in Prince Edward County. Below is a few of the top places to eat in The County!

The Vic Café – This café serves up fun brunches in a stark white interior with various pops of colour! The Vic Café is located in downtown Picton and also has a nice patio with heaters!

The Royal – Also in downtown Picton, The Royal is a hotel with both a restaurant and bar. You’ll find a variety of dishes on the menu, from breakfast to after dinner desserts. Plus, they have a lovely patio and secret garden.

North Docks Kitchen – Enjoy awesome views and fabulous gastric pub food from the largest waterfront patio in The County at North Docks Kitchen. Located in Wellington this restaurant features a local inspired menu.

Bloomfield Public House – This all in one along Bloomfield’s main street is a great place to grab food! The Bloomfield Public House serves up a variety of cuisine and cocktails. It’s also a bottle shop and market with take away items that are fit for a PEC picnic!

Waring House – At the Waring House you’ll find two great restaurants, the Barley Room Pub and Amelia’s Garden Dining Room. The pub offers elevated pub grub in what feels like an old English bar along with live music. Amelia’s Garden offers seasonal fine dining as well as afternoon tea.

They have a plant-filled bar serving you a welcome glass of rosé, picnic breakfasts, and smores round the fire at night. Honestly, it’s so worth it! I stayed here and it’s one of the best places I’ve stayed.

Drake Devonshire – Another of the most popular places to stay in Prince Edward County is the Drake Devonshire Hotel in Wellington. This lakeside boutique hotel goes a step above with a bar, restaurant, cool art installations, private beach, as well as various programs and events. Plus, some rooms have epic lake views!

Drake Motor Inn – Also in Wellington is an extension of the Devonshire known as the Drake Motor Inn. This fun hotel has 12 fun guest rooms that are modern with pops of colour. Parking in The County – There is on street parking in every small town across The County. However, it’s paid parking in Picton. Though there is a large free parking lot at the south end of Elizabeth Street. There’s also a free parking lot in Bloomfield just east of downtown.
