25 of the Best Book Stores in Ontario
There’s something magical about stepping into an independent bookstore – each with its own character and selection treasures waiting to be discovered. As someone who loves books, there’s nothing better than wandering through a cute little shop, on the hunt for my next read. Ontario if filled with plenty of cute and whimsical bookshops. So, if you are keen to find new bookshops to add to your next road trip, I’ve rounded up a list of the best book stores in Ontario.
As someone who is passionate about supporting local businesses, independent book stores are some of my favourites to shop at. There’s Dog-Eared Café in Paris, a perfect blend of coffee shop and bookstore where you can sip a latte while flipping through your latest find. And then there’s Curiosity House Books in Creemore, a cute and colorful shop that’s impossible to leave empty-handed. This guide shares shop across the province that sell both new and used books.

Bearly Used Books
One of the top attractions in Parry Sound is Bearly Used Books! With its maze of aisleways, stacked and packed with over 380,000 used books, you’ll find everything from mysteries to cookbooks.
Easily one of the best used book stores in Ontario, Bearly Used Books has been around for over 25 years. I stop in every time I’m in town. I love the random comfy chairs and great prices.
Bearly Used Books is massive, it spans 5000 square feet. So, make sure to plan to browse a while. And there’s a sweet bookshop dog too!
Rivendell
My go-to used book store near me is Rivendell in Barrie. Rivendell is the best independent bookstore in Barrie and is located in the Wellington Street plaza. After leaving another shop in town, Wendy opened Rivendell in 2009. And I literally followed her from the old store to her new one.
Rivendell is now owned and operated by new owners but remains the same beloved shop. It’s full of gently used books in a wide array of genres, from romance to thrillers, as well as fiction to non-fiction. Plus, everything is expertly organized to help you find what you’re looking for.
At the front of the store is an adorable area for kids, with a small kid’s table and large selection of children’s books.

Dog-Eared Café
Two of my favourite things are books and coffee! So, it’s no surprise that one of my favourite book shops in Ontario is Dog-Eared Café.
Dog-Eared Café is the perfect blend of coffee shop and book store. It’s one of the best places to visit in Paris. Located downtown, the shop has a cozy space to sit on plush red, vintage couches. Plus, it has an awesome view of the Grand River.

Alfsen House Books
In the heart of Markham Village is an unassuming building that looks like its someone’s home. But step inside Alfsen House Books’ door and you’ll find a treasure trove of used and out of print books
There is a particular series I read, the Simga Force book series by James Rollins. I’m always on the hunt for books in the series that I haven’t read, which is getting difficult. But I was delighted to find a bunch at Alfsen House Books.
The owner was so helpful in finding the books I was looking for. We got to talking and I learned he is also an artist. You’ll find many of his and other’s paintings throughout the book store as well.

The Bookery
One of the most magical Ontario bookshops is The Bookery in Fergus. Many people visit Fergus for its European vibes, and inside The Bookery you’ll find it too. As soon as you walk in, you’ll find their Celtic treasures, which include everything from jewellery to trinkets.
Among the Celtic treasures they also sell an assortment of unique pieces like gemstones, incense and more. It’s the perfect spot for Harry Potter fans!
In addition to the whimsical vibe, I love the nearly endless shelves of books. The Bookery is home to over 20,000 used books. I’ve found many great reads during my visits over the years. Plus, I love the vintage, old world charm it has. With vintage rugs and other collectables throughout.

Readers’ Choice
In the heart of downtown Orangeville is another must-visit Ontario book store, Readers’ Choice. This classic used bookshop has been a staple in town for over 20 years and I love exploring its shelves every time I visit Orangeville.
Wandering the winding aisles of Readers’ Choice, you’ll find a wide selection of books that range from biographies to early readers.
Another one of my favourite features of Readers’ Choice is their fun book-inspired items. I’ve bought a number of unique things over the years here, like Sherlock Holmes tea and a classic book t-shirt.
They also sell other items like puzzles, journals and toys. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for unique gift ideas.

The Merrickville Book Emporium
In one of the most historic small towns in Ontario is a book store full of rare and antique books. That shop is the Merrickville Book Emporium. Located in a cute little house in downtown Merrickville, it’s full of rooms packed with interesting reads.
The Book Emporium opened in 2013 and specializes in rare collectible books including Canadiana and military history. But you’ll find a variety of other genres. But it’s a great spot for finding unique books you won’t find anywhere else.
The Owl Pen
Whether you’re looking for a book to cozy up with during your Muskoka getaway or are just on the hunt for your next read, pop into The Owel Pen. This adorable independent bookstore in Bracebridge is a must visit.
The Owl Pen is family owned and operated and one of my top places to visit in Bracebridge when I go. Covering two floors, you’ll find a neat and organized used bookshop with quirky hidden gems throughout.
Insider Tip: Be sure to check out the view of downtown Bracebridge from the second-floor windows.

Lockwood Books
One of my favourite indie book stores in Ontario is Lockwood Books. Located downtown St. Thomas, I love the enchanted atmosphere of this shop.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll smell the rich aroma of vintage books. Throughout the shop are a diverse mix of antiques, from retro cameras to antique furniture. I was even told that the shop is haunted with strange happenings in a chair that sits near an old armoire.
Lockwood Books has a variety of books to choose from. But they have a large selection of vintage and out-of-print books.
Plus, I love that they have a resident bookshop cat!
Bay Used Books
Another of my favourite used bookshops is Bay Used Books in Sudbury. I pop into the shop every time I visit Sudbury and always find something new.
Bay Used Books has been opened for nearly 50 years and has over 200,000 titles to choose from. I love the budget friendly prices. Inside you’ll find a fun set of stairs with each step featuring a different book cover.
In addition to the fun stair mural on inside, there’s a book mural on the side of the building too!

The Bookshop
For any book nerd, a must addition to your list of things to do in Kincardine should be a visit to The Bookshop. Formerly known as Condor Books, this independent bookstore has been a staple of over 20 years.
The Bookshop in Kincardine sells a mix of used, new and rare books. It has a great selection and is well organized.
Torn Pages
A hidden gem of a bookshop can be found in the small town of Stayner. Torn Pages is located along the main strip of downtown Stayner.
Inside the small shop you’ll find it stacked with countless second-hand books. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they’ll ensure you find what you’re looking for.
Insider Tip: This small bookshop has more books in their inventory that goes beyond what’s inside the shop. The owner has a number of shipping containers full of books. So, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask and they could still have it.

Beggars Banquet Books
One of the top attractions in Gananoque for book lovers is Beggars Banquet Books. This wonderful bookshop has both new and used books. The large selection includes over 7000 new titles and over 150,000 pre-loved books.
Every time I visit the Thousand Islands I always stop in and I always find something! I’ve found books in their used section that I’ve been on the hunt for. And I’ve discovered new releases from local authors.
In addition to books, Beggars Banquet Books sells other fun items like puzzles, local bookmarks, and even one of my favourite coffee brands, Birch Bark Coffee.

Blue Heron Books
In the heart of downtown Uxbridge is one of the best bookstores in Ontario – Blue Heron Books. Don’t just take my word for it, they’ve won the Libris Award for the best bookstore in Canada twice! Even Stuart McLean dubbed Blue Heron his favourite.
This staple in town has been a community hub for over 30 years, hosting a variety of events, like author readings, and even pop-up markets.
As a frequent visitor to Uxbridge, I always pop in to see what’s new. They always have the best seasonal displays, like blind date books for Valentine’s Day and festive reads for the holidays.

Curiosity House Books
I’m a sucker for colour, especially when it’s pink! So, it’s no surprise that one of the cutest book stores is Curiosity House Books. Set in an adorable little pink house in Creemore, this indie bookshop is such a gem.
Within the pink house you’ll find a fantastic supply of new releases, fab cookbooks and local reads. Curiosity House Books also sells a variety of fun items like puzzles and hosts author events.

Fanfare Books
Best known for its award-winning theatre; Stratford is full of creative things to do. Along with the Stratford Festival and art galleries, its home to another top independent book store – Fanfare Books.
Fanfare Books is one of the oldest shops on this list, it opened in 1967. For over 55 years, it has been a fan favourite for locals and visitors alike.
With a green store front, exposed brick walls inside and antique lighting, it reminds me of some of my favourite British bookshops.
Furby House Books
One of my favourite places to visit in downtown Port Hope is Furby House Books! Set in one of the stunning historic buildings, the bookshop’s allure starts with its striking old world looking exterior.
Inside Furby House Books, the classic old book store vibe continues with dark wood book cases along the walls. Since 1989, this independent Ontario bookshop has been a staple in town.
Along with browsing the selection of new books, I love checking out the variety of fun book merchandise. I’ve purchased a number of items, from bookmarks to fun book-inspired totes.

Mill Street Books
Another beloved shop is Mill Street Books in Almonte, which won the award for Ottawa’s Best Bookstore. I love the small town local charm of this shop. At the front you’ll find an Almonte puzzle and a book about the town too.
In addition to their great selection of new books, they sell various items like cards, journals, cute stickers and even a Mill Street Books tote bag.
Insider Tip: If you’re a fan of street art, check out the alley next door for a fun book mural.
Georgian Bay Books
Close to the shores of Georgian Bay is another gem of an indie book shop – Georgian Bay Books. Located in downtown Midland, this independent bookstore opened its doors nearly a decade ago, in 2016.
I love that they are passionate about supporting and promoting local authors and host book signings. They also run a monthly poetry club that takes place the 4th Wednesday of the month, which is fun if you’re looking for things to do in Midland.

Master’s Book Store
One book shop that I have been visiting for nearly my entire life is Master’s Book Store in Haliburton. It’s located in the adorable village of Haliburton in what is known as the Village Barn on main street.
For over 30 years, Master’s Book Store has been a popular spot for locals and cottagers alike. I still remember my grandmother taking me to get books every time I visited her. I still can’t leave the shop without buying something.
With endless bookshelves packed and more stacked on the floor, part of the fun of browsing is finding what you want. They are known for their large selection of Bibles, but they sell everything from history books to mystery novels.
Manticore Books
Set in a stunning historic building in downtown Orillia is Manticore Books. It opened in 1989 and is said to be the largest independent Heritage bookstore north of Toronto. I love the exposed brick walls, antique tin ceiling and vintage lights.
In addition to their wonderful selection of books, Manticore also hosts author talks throughout the year. I also love the local section where I also find something new.

Books & Company
If you’re looking for things to do Picton then pop in to browse Books & Company. This large independent bookstore has been open since 1994 and has everything from books to newspapers.
One of my favourite parts of Books & Company is the store cat, Pushkin! Often curled up in a chair or wandering around, Pushkin is a star and even has merchandise.
Attached to the sprawling shop is one of Picton’s coffee shops – Lily’s Café. It’s the perfect spot to grab a book and coffee, then sit and read on a rainy day.

Octopus Books
In my favourite artsy neighbourhood in Ottawa, the Glebe, you’ll find a quirky and cute bookshop. Octopus Books in Ottawa has been a staple since 1969. It specializes in books that think outside the box as well as those that amplify marginalized voices.
But don’t worry if you’re looking for something else, they have a little be of everything. Plus, on the side of the cute little yellow house is a colourful mural!
Cedar Canoe Books
One of the newest independent book stores in Ontario on this list is Cedar Canoe Books in Huntsville. This new shop is a refreshing breathe of fresh air inside with its pale and earthy colour tones. Plus, I love the canoe hanging from the ceiling.
They have a wide assortment of books in all genres, from cookbooks to best sellers. They also have a wall that highlights specific books like those by Indigenous authors, local writers and staff picks.
I also love their merch that features the canoe!

Reader’s Haven Book Store
While most plan a trip to Tobermory for outdoor attractions like the Grotto and Flowerpot Island, there’s a gem of a bookstore in town you must visit too. Reader’s Haven Book Store in Tobermory begin as a small shop inside the Crowsnest Pub in 2006 before moving its current spot on the bay.
I still remember my first visit when I bought my first Bruce Trail guide. The book shop has a selection of Bruce Trail merchandise as well as other local products.
To be honest, this is one book shop that has it all! Along with books and local items, they sell board games, souvenirs, and even lottery! All to help you have a fun trip.
